Project Peaceful Warriors

Project Peaceful Warriors Integrating mindfulness in education to empower minds and communities through peace.

Project Peaceful Warriors is a non-profit organization located in New Orleans, LA. Our mission is to provide trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness programming to schools — providing students and educators with tools to reduce stress and anxiety, combat burnout, and lead happier and healthier lives. To accomplish this goal, we partner with schools, community centers, local yoga studios, museums, and

other organizations. Since launching in February of 2016, we have served 9 schools and 5 community-based organizations, reaching over 700 students, and 250 teachers. In addition to helping heal youth trauma through small group classes, we aim to empower teachers to bring yoga and mindfulness into their classrooms in order to decrease classroom distractions and bullying, reduce student anxiety, and burnout. We provide schools with tangible tools that increase focus, engagement, peer relationships, and academic performance.

We are humbled by all the ways the community, those near and far, showed up for the mental wellness of our young people this . From emails to social media posts to donations, our young people can rest knowing we’ve got their backs as they continue to navigate a world changed by the pandemic, climate crisis, and political polarization with the proven tools of yoga and mindfulness.

We’re thrilled to have raised nearly $2,300 toward our $21,000 goal to Fill the Gap in Youth Mental Health Services. As the evening winds down, we will continue to celebrate with both hands over our hearts and a deep sense of thanks to you, the Peaceful Warrior Krewe, and the generosity y’all have extended thus far.

We love y’all. Thank you.

Ready, set, GIVE!

Today is the day to show our young people how much their mental health matters to us. The need for tools and supports like our small group yoga and mindfulness classes continues to grow even as resources are stripped away our schools, and they’re looking to us to fill the gap.

We’re just 6 days away from , a global day of giving, where you get to support nonprofit organizations whose mission speaks to your heart. For reference here’s ours:

Project Peaceful Warriors supports the healing of New Orleans youth, educators, and families. We collaborate with New Orleans schools, community centers, and organizations to grow healing-centered learning spaces through equitable access to the tools and yoga and mindfulness. We aim to counter the dominate narrative of trauma attached to the youth population, imagining a future where the suffering of intentionally marginalized groups is no longer considered a norm. Our School, Educator, and Family Programs work in tandem to support the village already surrounding our youth, caring for the caretaker and child simultaneously so they can empower themselves with the evidence-based practices of yoga and mindfulness.

If our mission speaks to your heart and you wish to close the gap in youth mental health services, consider making your gift by clicking the link in our bio today, on GivingTuesday (11/29), or any time between now and 12/31.

Join us in wishing our fearless Founder, , the happiest of birthdays. As the organization continues to grow following Chelsea’s transition to our Board of Directors, we continue to ground ourselves in her sense of systemic self-care as a means toward community care and her unconditional belief in our young people as the solution. We love you, Chelsea. Thanks for continuing to shine your light.

Want to wish Chelsea a happy birthday? Hop on over to her Facebook profile where she’s raising $3400 in honor of her 34 years on earth and to help fill the gap in youth mental health services. There is no greater gift than that of sustained support.

Not connected with Chelsea on Facebook? Click the link in our bio to donate to our Fill the Gap campaign page. (She will still see it and love you for it! 🎈🎂🌟)

When young people participate in our small group yoga and mindfulness classes, they become leaders in their community. Sometimes that leadership looks like modeling techniques for their peers. Other times that leadership looks like holding space for their peers to explore the practice with support and without judgement. Both of these experiences help our peaceful warriors to develop a sense of responsibility toward others, a knowing that can guide them into an adulthood that is rooted in empathy and building community.

We all can agree that experiences like our small group yoga and mindfulness classes are critical to the development and well being of the next generation of adults we are all collectively raising. Despite this fact, many of our school partners are unable to prioritize programs like ours due to lasting impacts of COVID-19 and Hurricane Ida.

This you have the opportunity to help close this gap in youth mental health. Whether it’s a one-time donation, a monthly gift, or a social media shoutout, your support has no limits.

Click the link in our bio to donate today. You can also set a reminder in your calendar for 11/29 and join the in supporting our work.

Our Peaceful Warriors need their Krewe and we’re excited for y’all to answer their call.

Our Saturday morning Family Yoga Course is now FULL! And our Friday evening class has been cancelled.

We’re so excited to meet our Peaceful Warrior Families this weekend!

Didn’t get a chance to register this time around? Did our days and times not work with your family’s schedule? Let us know! We plan to offer two more courses this September and we aim to make our offerings as accessible as possible.

What is Family Yoga?

Family Yoga is a FREE 3-week program where families come together once a week to practice yoga and mindfulness. In the first half, caretakers and children are divided into their own classes that are centered around the same theme (i.e. beginnings, space, trust). After a short break, families reunite for the second half of the session where they reflect on the theme together and create a mindfulness tool to use at home. Families will receive a Family Yoga and Mindfulness Resource Booklet that includes how and when to use all the techniques learned throughout the course.

Family Yoga is an opportunity to reconnect with yourself, your loved ones, and explore how to live even more meaningfully together.

With this class being the last in our Spring 2022 Free Yoga for Educators series, we want to make it special. After class we will host an informal NOLA Educators Circle- a safe space for y'all to reflect and share wins, frustrations, challenges, and lessons learned from the past school year. As former classroom educators ourselves, we understand how critical it is to connect with each other, share our stories, hear the stories of our peers, and offer one another support, validation, and wisdom. Participation is, of course, optional. You're also welcome to attend and simply listen to others.

Whether you participate in the Educator's Circle or not, we'd like to treat y'all to breakfast after class. Below you will find a space to write in your order from Breads on Oak (Oak Street location). We will order it, pick it up, and bring it to NOLA Spaces at 10am when class ends.

Dear Peaceful Warrior Krewe,

With two hands on our hearts we find both stability and love in the support y’all generously offered toward our mission this GiveNOLA Day. We’re excited to see our young people and their educators again next fall and share with them all the ways their community showed up for their mental health and well-being.

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again and again- it takes a Krewe to support the village that surrounds our young people, the next generation of compassionate, self-actualized, and community-oriented adults. With your help, the future continues to beam brightly.

We love you,

The PPW Team

This GiveNOLA Day, we extend our highest gratitude to Ms. Coco who has been teaching with Project Peaceful Warriors since the beginning. She has guided every PPW Yoga and Mindfulness Educator through the careful art of balancing a lesson plan with the present needs of students as they fluctuate in the moment as well as unlearning inherited biases that keep us from fully loving ourselves and each other. Ms. Coco is the standard, and we are forever grateful for her presence, impact, and grace.

Read more from Ms. Coco below about why she supports PPW’s mission to make yoga and mindfulness accessible to all of New Orleans youth.

We love you, 💜

・・・
I believe that yoga and mindfulness can support young people by teaching them about their bodies and their minds. That’s why I’m supporting this . In my years as a teacher to young adults I have seen the way students apply what they learn from the teachings of Yoga—like the Yamas and Niyamas— to guide them towards what they value most. Students report using breathing techniques, meditation, self-care, and mindfulness to support them when they feel stressed. They also report that they have more ways to manage their anger, frustration, and anxiety. Today consider giving to this organization that’s very dear to my heart and help to support more young people with yoga and mindfulness!
