Carol White, a Los Angeles housewife in the late 1980s, comes down with a debilitating illness with no clear diagnosis. A profoundly unsettling work from the great American director Todd Haynes, SAFE functions on multiple levels: as a prescient commentary on self-help culture, as a metaphor for the AIDS crisis, as a drama about class and social estrangement, and as a horror film about what you cannot see.

Two heartsick Hong Kong cops, both jilted by ex-lovers, cross paths at the Midnight Express take-out food stand, where the ethereal pixie waitress Faye works. Anything goes in Wong’s gloriously shot and utterly unexpected charmer, which cemented the s*x appeal of its gorgeous stars and forever turned canned pineapple and the Mamas & the Papas’ “California Dreamin’” into tokens of romantic longing.
