This Memorial Day, we remember the freedom fighters history tried to forget. Before there was a United States worth saluting, there were men who gave their lives so that Black people could live free.

🙏🏿Toussaint Louverture — the self-liberated general who led enslaved Africans in Haiti to defeat the most powerful empires on earth, and died in a cold French prison cell in 1803 for the crime of demanding freedom.

🕯️ Nat Turner — who in August 1831 rose up in Southampton County, Virginia, and was hanged on November 11th of that year for daring to believe that God did not make him a slave.

🕯️ John Brown — the white abolitionist who raided Harpers Ferry on October 16, 1859, and went to the gallows on December 2nd saying, “I am worth now infinitely more to die than to live.”

They wore no U.S. uniform. No flag was folded for their families. No bugler played taps. But they died in a war for freedom — the longest war this country has ever fought.
This Memorial Day, pour one out for the ones who bled for liberation before it was legal to want it.
Their names. Our breath. Forever.

48 hours.
New Orleans to Vegas and back.
No sleep, no hesitation. Because when freedom calls, you answer. 🖤✊🏾

This week Participatory Defense Movement New Orleans & Louisiana linked up with our national hub and freedom fighters from across the country to stand up for — and baby, we showed up.

Shoutout to Mass Liberation Project for being a living, breathing example of what it means to fight and WIN. Two life sentences. Overturned. By a federal court. Now we demand his release — because the fight ain’t over ’til Ricky walks free. 🔥

Please join us in wishing Lisa Smothers Finch a Happy Birthday. We love you, Lisa. 🖤

From over a decade of road trips to Angola together to SEVEN YEARS of founding PDMNOLA — you have never once flinched from the hard things. You just show up. For the families. For the fight. For us.

That’s who you are. Not just someone who cares, but someone who moves when others need it most. You lift. You step in. You stay.

There are very few people in this world so committed to the greater good of others — and I am so grateful I get to call one of them my cofounder, my fellow freedom fighter, and my friend.
We love you, Lisa. Happy Birthday. May this be the best year of life yet!🔥
