This week we had our Closing Ceremong to remember the lives of the pediatric cancer patients we have lost and the lives of children who are still fighting the battle. The city of New Orleans made March 13th ”Geaux for the Gold With Purpose Day” where we can always come together and remember the brave children who have had pediatric cancer. Today we also stopped by Children's Hospital New Orleans to deliver over 100 cards of support which will be proudly displayed in Children’s Hospital.

Pediatric cancer survivor Emily Hines says, “When I was diagnosed with cancer at 16 years old I knew that the road ahead was not going to be easy - and I was right. However, I learned more in those 8 months about how to be compassionate and brave than I had in my entire life. Now, I have a purpose and I believe that it is to be an advocate for everyone affected by childhood cancer. My hope is that I live to see the day when we discover the cure for childhood cancer.”

When we are united, change is imminent. The fight against pediatric cancer is long from over. Loyola University New Orleans Interim Provost David Borofsky says, “We need to help young people, who are the future of our world to survive. We have put a great deal of time and money into cancer research but not into the same type of research that will allow our young to grow, prosper and help change the world.”

Pediatric cancer survivor and sophomore graphic design major Ariel Landry says, “While no child should have to experience cancer, it does happen. I’d like to remind people that these children are more than their disease, and programs that support community education are vital."

One in five children diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. will not survive. For the ones who do, the battle is never over. Senior Molly Olwig studying English writing says, “I hadn’t realized how prevalent an issue pediatric cancer was prior to Geaux for the Gold With Purpose events.” We need to continue to educate our communities about the problems pediatric cancer patients face.
