Harley-Davidson Found Liable in $287M Verdict for Fatal Motorcycle Accident
Harold Morris, a longtime motorcycle enthusiast, was awarded over $287 million in damages by a jury following a severe accident on June 6, 2020, involving a 2019 Harley-Davidson Tri Glide motorcycle. The accident, which occurred near the New York-Pennsylvania border, resulted in the death of Morris' partner, Pamela SinClair, and significant injuries to Morris. The lawsuit, which Morris and SinClair’s estate filed against Harley-Davidson, claimed a defect in the motorcycle's traction control system caused the crash. A Livingston County jury found Harley-Davidson liable, awarding $240 million in punitive damages. Morris, a retired Kodak employee, expressed that while the monetary award is substantial, the primary goal was to hold Harley-Davidson accountable and prevent similar incidents. The case highlighted issues with the motorcycle's safety, as Morris had previously experienced another accident with the same vehicle. Harley-Davidson disputes the claims and plans to appeal the verdict.
