Rest in Power, Mr. Jerome "Big Duck" Smith. 🕊️🖤⚜️On behalf of the Black Men of Labor, we offer our deepest, most sincere condolences to the Smith family and his children. Thank you for sharing your father with the world. To many, he was a surrogate father, a brother, a friend, a mentor, and a fearless fighter for social justice and equality.Mr. Smith was a true cultural bearer and an icon of New Orleans Black Masking Culture. As a legendary Freedom Rider and CORE organizer, he put his life on the line for civil rights and famously spoke truth to power at the highest levels of government. Through his work as a cultural anchor for Tremé and the founder of Tambourine and Fan, he spent decades teaching generations of children their history, their worth, and how to love their city.Thank you for giving us a blueprint for courage, Big Duck. Your footprint on New Orleans and the nation will never fade. Treme BlackMaskingCulture NewOrleansHistory RestInPower

The scriptures remind us in Psalm 90:10 that the days of our lives are "three score years and ten"—or eighty if strength endures. To see you bless this world at 83 years of age is a beautiful testament to God’s extraordinary grace, strength, and favor upon your life. You have gone far beyond the ordinary measure, serving as a steadfast pillar of wisdom, love, and guidance for generations in our community. As you celebrate this milestone, we honor the rich legacy you continue to build and the quiet grace you bring to everyone around you.
