DID YOU KNOW: William "Bill" Millin, known as the "Mad Piper," was a Scottish bagpiper who famously played the pipes during the D-Day landings in Normandy.

He was the personal piper to Lord Lovat, the commander of the 1st Special Service Brigade. Bill was the only man to wear a kilt during the landings and was armed only with his pipes and a dirk.

Bill's extraordinary presence and the sound of the bagpipes on the beach, despite the intense gunfire, have become a symbol of courage and defiance during the Normandy invasion. Captured German snipers later stated they did not shoot him because they thought he was insane and suicidal, according to the British Army.

Bill Millin's actions at D-Day, particularly his unwavering spirit and the inspiring music he provided, are remembered as a powerful testament to the human spirit during the war.

Scottish cuisine: mince & tatties

Mince and tatties is a popular Scottish dish, consisting of minced beef and mashed potato. It sometimes contains other vegetables or thickening agents. It has had a longtime connection to school dinners, where the quality of the ingredients and the ability to feed a large number of children made it popular.

There is no set recipe or form of cooking and large variations can occur from cook to cook. Essentially the dish consists of varying amounts of minced beef, onions, carrots or other root vegetables, seasoning and stock. Some cooks add thickening agents such as flour, oatmeal or cornflour.

In Scotland, the quaich is not just a cup. 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The word comes from the Scottish Gaelic cuach, meaning "cup" or "hollow." But its meaning runs far deeper than that. The quaich has two handles, one on each side, and that design is no accident. To accept a quaich from someone, you had to hold it with both hands, leaving yourself completely open and defenceless. It was the ultimate act of trust.

For centuries, the quaich was at the heart of every significant moment in Scottish life: the sealing of a clan alliance, the welcome of a guest into a Highland home, the toast at a wedding, the farewell before a long journey. To share a dram from the quaich was to say: I trust you with my life.

That tradition lives on today at Scottish weddings, clan gatherings, and Highland games across the world. If you have Scottish blood, there is a good chance your ancestors once passed this very cup. πŸ₯ƒ

What Scottish traditions have been passed down in your family? Drop them in the comments below, we would love to hear them! πŸ‘‡
