Global New Orleans

Global New Orleans https://linktr.ee/globalneworleans Personally sharing knowledge, customs, or a meal helps cross-cultural understanding to develop.

Global New Orleans, a 501(c)3 nonprofit membership organization, fosters citizen diplomacy and cross-cultural understanding by serving as the local liaison for the US Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and other exchange programs. When exchange participants come to New Orleans, Global New Orleans arranges for them to socialize with our members and to exchange ideas

with their professional counterparts, all while experiencing local culture. This is citizen diplomacy, ordinary citizens building extraordinary relationships “one handshake at a time”. Through citizen diplomacy, we can help shape US foreign relations and grow our community's global competency. To become a member and citizen diplomat, visit www.globalneworleans.org/membership

The IVLP project “Endowments for Culture and Heritage Organizations” brought representatives from Poland’s Ministry of Culture and cultural heritage institutions to New Orleans to explore sustainable funding models and community engagement strategies that support the city’s vibrant cultural landscape.

One highlight of the visit was a meeting with the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience, where participants learned how the museum preserves and interprets the history of Jewish communities across the Gulf South. Discussions focused on themes of identity, migration, memory, and resilience, as well as the museum’s approach to building long-term sustainability and fostering meaningful partnerships with educators, community organizations, and cultural institutions to deepen public understanding of Jewish life and culture.

As we prepare to commemorate Juneteenth, we encourage everyone to explore the 4th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival at Whitney Plantation this weekend.

The festival will feature free admission, educational programming, cultural performances, and opportunities to engage with the stories and history that continue to shape our nation.

Civil Rights Activist Leona Tate will be featured in an 11am Panel Discussion, and the event will close out with live music from The Maroons band.

We are also honored to note Dr. Ibrahima Seck, Director of Research at Whitney Plantation, whose work has helped foster meaningful conversations about history, memory, and freedom.

Join Global New Orleans for a casual happy hour with a visiting delegation of maritime professionals from Indonesia. In keeping with the maritime theme, we'll gather at Felix's Restaurant & Oyster Bar on the Lakefront, where you can enjoy the outdoor patio, happy hour specials, beautiful waterfront views, and great conversation with our international guests.
You don't need to work in the maritime industry to enjoy this event. Do you like boats? Fishing? Talking about world travel? Meeting interesting people from different cultures? Come share a little New Orleans hospitality, make new connections, and enjoy an evening of community diplomacy by the water. We hope you'll join us!

We love seeing what our exchange alumni accomplish after returning home! Last fall, we had the privilege of hosting Phan Kim "Kimmi" Nguyet Ha through the YSEALI Professional Fellows Program. During her time in New Orleans, Kimmi worked with Grounds Krewe to help make Mardi Gras more sustainable through upcycled and recycled products.

Kimmi was recently featured in ELLE Vietnam for her leadership and work advancing circular economy solutions and sustainable business practices. In the interview, Kimmi reflects on a moment that helped shape her work. While visiting the beach with her daughter, they pulled up a fishing net expecting to find fish. Instead, it was filled with trash. Her daughter looked at her and asked, "Why, Mom?"

That simple question stayed with her.

As Kimmi began working with recycled plastics, she realized that the material itself had not changed. What changed was how people viewed it. If it's seen as waste, it gets discarded. If it's seen as a material, new possibilities emerge. The same perspective, she says, can apply to people, ideas, and opportunities that are often overlooked because no one has yet imagined what they could become.

Kimmi's story is a reminder that international exchange doesn't end when a fellowship concludes. The relationships, ideas, and collaborations built through programs like YSEALI continue to create impact across communities and continents.

Congratulations, Kimmi! We are proud to be part of your journey and can't wait to see what's next.

Louisiana’s leadership in environmental resilience, disaster preparedness, and recovery continues to attract professionals from around the world seeking to exchange ideas and best practices.

Global New Orleans was proud to host a distinguished group of disaster preparedness and emergency management professionals from Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru. During their visit, participants explored Louisiana’s innovative approaches to storm resilience, emergency coordination, coastal restoration, and public safety through meetings with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, the Water Institute, the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, Delgado Maritime & Industrial Training Center, the New Orleans Police Department, and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.

Through these exchanges, international leaders gained firsthand insight into how Louisiana communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from environmental challenges while building long-term resilience.

This week, New Orleans had the honor of serving as the inaugural host city for SAIL 250, a national maritime celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. As the only Gulf Coast stop on the route, New Orleans welcomed visiting ships, military partners, and international guests while showcasing the maritime legacy that has shaped our city and our nation. From the Port of New Orleans to the Higgins boats that helped secure Allied victory in World War II, our city has long played an outsized role in the American story.

The celebration is especially meaningful since we hosted one of our YSEALI Fellows, was part of planning this great event! Dr. Phitchakan "Liw" Chuangchai from Thailand spent a month in New Orleans earlier this year, through the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative Professional Fellows Program. During her fellowship, she worked with NOCCI and New Orleans & Company supporting SAIL 250 while learning how New Orleans leverages culture, tourism, and community engagement to drive economic development.

As America 250 encourages us to reflect on our nation's past and future, Liw's fellowship serves as a powerful example of how international exchange continues to strengthen our communities. Her contributions are a reminder that New Orleans has always been connected to the world, and that some of our greatest stories come from working together across cultures and borders.

Join Global New Orleans for a Networking Happy Hour & Farewell Celebration for our Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Fellows!

For the past month, these entrepreneurs and changemakers have been living and working in New Orleans through professional fellowships across the city. We’ve loved introducing them to our community, and now it’s time to send them off in true New Orleans fashion.

Come meet Fellows from Belize, Suriname, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Lucia, and more. If you haven’t had a chance to connect with them during their time here, this is the perfect opportunity.

We’re especially excited that Berlina, our Fellow from St. Lucia and a chef by trade, has spent the past month working with the team at Addis NOLA. Together, they’ll be serving Ethiopian-St. Lucian fusion snacks for the evening, along with St. Lucian rum punch specials and more.

Whether you’re a longtime Global New Orleans supporter, internationally minded professional, traveler, host family, or simply curious about global exchange, we’d love to see you there.
