POC Zine Project

POC Zine Project Sharing information and resources. Say Hi: [email protected] - We love you. We aim to change that.

We want to make it easier for POC zine fans and their supporters to find a diverse selection of zines made by POC. Zines are a vital component in the long tradition of self-publication. They share knowledge and experiences that supplement (and often contradict) the information that other sources distribute, encouraging free thought. There are several valuable zine collections in the United States

(many accessible online) but none that are devoted to curating POC zines while partnering with educators, universities, activist networks and DIY/punk networks of all stripes.

I love tabling for POC Zine Project and collaborator at New Orleans Bookfair.

Since 2015 I have been in community with Imagine Water Works co-founder here in New Orleans & am honored to produce the IWW newsletter and support their community outreach and partnerships.

Since 2010 POCZP has remained my experiment in art, activism, and community through materiality. work helps me fund POC Zine Project initiatives and to pay my bills, so this table is a reflection of all three important things I am a part of.

On Monday, October 20, a federal judge ordered the DoDEA to immediately restore the 600+ books & zines it scrubbed from more than 100 Defense Department K-12 public schools that serve 67,000 children of military personnel – and to cease from removing more.

The judge ruled to protect student freedoms to “inquire, to study and to evaluate, to gain new maturity and understanding.”

Today I hosted the zine-making station at the Grantmakers in Health Conference session at Imagine Water Works’ The Imagination Farm in New Orleans.

While chatting with leaders and decisionmakers in health and philanthropy, I made & shared a hybrid speculative fiction/FAQ mini zine about The Imagination Farm called The Green Beings (read it in the photos), & explained my cultural production and collaborations as POC Zine Project (2010-present).

I was happy to help represent Imagine Water Works at this event, as they are one of the few nonprofits I trust. They tangibly make a difference, vs waste a lot of money while giving lip service to change, which unfortunately is something that many nonprofits tend to do.

While speaking with funders about zines as a thirds space, intersectional praxis for reimagining change management theory and integrative practices, I shared anonymous stories from my 10+ years of experience helping organizations & institutions incorporate zine-making & zine publishing into public-facing programming and internal professional development workshops.

I have helped many orgs create a safe space for diffusing challenging but necessary conversations in ways that support productive communication and problem-solving that supports retention and organizational growth.

That’s fancy verbiage to say that I make magic with zines in ways that continue to tangibly bless people & organizations long after I’m no longer involved. It’s one of my gifts & skills that I’ve been cultivating foDaniela Capistrano. - Daniela Capistrano
