Rural Roots Louisiana, Center for Constitutional Rights and Louisiana Bucket Brigade have filed suit challenging the Port’s proposed $400 million bond financing for a marine terminal benefiting Hyundai Steel in West Ascension Parish.

The lawsuit alleges that the Port violated the Louisiana Constitution by failing to provide legally required public notice and retroactively approving a $15 million state loan (3 months later!).

This is part of the continuing trend of secrecy and back door deals. Executive Directors of the port signed NDA’s and the Port’s meeting agendas and minutes about the project refer to the Hyundai marine terminal only as “Project Henry,” a code name that keeps the public in the dark about what is being discussed and decided.

Our communities deserve transparency, accountability, and a voice in decisions that impact our homes, health, land, and future. Public resources should serve the public, not corporate interests behind closed doors.

Last week families who live along the proposed pipeline Blue Point to Pelican Pipeline in French Settlement, LA. spoke about their concerns.

Danny Aydell is one of the many landowners oppose carbon capture and storage (CCS) but are afraid that if they don’t allow Enbridge to have easements on their land for this pipeline, the company will seize the land against their will.

A proposed Enbridge 50-mile carbon capture pipeline would transport approximately 2.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year from the proposed CF ammonia facility in Modeste (Ascension Parish) to an injection site in Holden (Livingston Parish).

The pipeline would begin at the CF Industry’s Blue Point Ammonia Complex on the proposed RiverPlex MegaPark and run beneath the Mississippi River, near Pelican Point subdivision, and through residential and commercial properties in Ascension and Livingston Parishes.

It would also run dangerously close to multiple schools including Sorrento Primary School and French Settlement High School.

On September 22, Ascension Parish government released some of the non-disclosure agreements that it has withheld for a year and that were the subject of a December 2025 lawsuit.

Now that certain records have been released, two Cooperative Endeavor Agreements (CEAs) between Ascension Parish and Hyundai Steel, the anchor tenant of the proposed RiverPlex MegaPark industrialization on the West Bank of Ascension Parish, are expected to be voted on by the Ascension Parish Council soon.

This is not economic development, it’s destruction. These deals with Hyundai have no enforceable mechanisms for their promises of employment and are lopsided giveaways from Louisiana taxpayers to a wealthy corporation. The state has rushed through the approval of these bonds with the secrecy and speed that we are seeing all over Louisiana.

The loans are on top of $2.6 billion in already announced direct and indirect incentives for the project.

Rural Roots Louisiana , Center For Constitutional Rights and Bucket Brigade have been in court over many cases surrounding the proposed RiverPlex MegaPark including challenging agreements to provide a tax incentive package to Hyundai without clearing it with the state bond commission.

LDEQ, the state and the parish are trying to hide behind NDA’s and rushes processes but we are continuing our fight, the future of our home is at stake. Louisiana First News

When you look behind the curtain at what’s going on with Hyundai, it is easy to understand why the biggest corporations on earth are coming to Louisiana. The state of Louisiana is committing hundreds of millions of dollars to Hyundai, and yet Hyundai does not even have a legal obligation to provide jobs. It’s a lopsided love affair.

Corporations like SpaceX and Meta are coming here because they see that Louisiana can be taken for a ride. Our public officials are signing NDAs, and the public is kept from information about the massive amounts of taxpayer dollars that are promised. Landry claims this will benefit Louisiana, but the math simply doesn’t work, and the Hyundai deal shows it. We are giving away hundreds of millions of dollars – by some estimates more than two billion – and getting pollution and a destroyed landscape in return.

Flying in the air today in Ascension Parish as public officials, many of whom signed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) are joining Hyundai executives for a groundbreaking for a proposed steel facility dogged by allegations of secrecy and misuse of public money.

This groundbreaking is amid continued legal action around public records battles, bond issuance issues and the proposed facilities threatening of historic Black communities, including burial sites of enslaved individuals who are buried on the former plantation sites slated for the RiverPlex MegaPark.

The total incentive package for Hyundai exceeds $2 billion dollars and what do we get in return? More pollution and community destruction.

From the Meta data center in Richland Parish to SpaceX in Vermilion Parish, Governor Landry and state and local officials are pushing to bring in as much big industry, as quickly and as quietly as possible.

In Ascension Parish, community members are fighting back against erasure from the proposed RiverPlex MegaPark, a 17,000-acre industrial park planned for the West Bank of Ascension Parish.

A parish is already ranked among the top 10 most polluted counties or parishes in the country does not need to give billions of dollars away to corporations. It needs investment in local businesses, healthy communities, and sustainable futures for Modeste, Donaldsonville, and people across Ascension Parish.
