When you look behind the curtain at what’s going on with Hyundai, it is easy to understand why the biggest corporations on earth are coming to Louisiana. The state of Louisiana is committing hundreds of millions of dollars to Hyundai, and yet Hyundai does not even have a legal obligation to provide jobs. It’s a lopsided love affair.

Corporations like SpaceX and Meta are coming here because they see that Louisiana can be taken for a ride. Our public officials are signing NDAs, and the public is kept from information about the massive amounts of taxpayer dollars that are promised. Landry claims this will benefit Louisiana, but the math simply doesn’t work, and the Hyundai deal shows it. We are giving away hundreds of millions of dollars – by some estimates more than two billion – and getting pollution and a destroyed landscape in return.

Flying in the air today in Ascension Parish as public officials, many of whom signed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) are joining Hyundai executives for a groundbreaking for a proposed steel facility dogged by allegations of secrecy and misuse of public money.

This groundbreaking is amid continued legal action around public records battles, bond issuance issues and the proposed facilities threatening of historic Black communities, including burial sites of enslaved individuals who are buried on the former plantation sites slated for the RiverPlex MegaPark.

The total incentive package for Hyundai exceeds $2 billion dollars and what do we get in return? More pollution and community destruction.

From the Meta data center in Richland Parish to SpaceX in Vermilion Parish, Governor Landry and state and local officials are pushing to bring in as much big industry, as quickly and as quietly as possible.

In Ascension Parish, community members are fighting back against erasure from the proposed RiverPlex MegaPark, a 17,000-acre industrial park planned for the West Bank of Ascension Parish.

A parish is already ranked among the top 10 most polluted counties or parishes in the country does not need to give billions of dollars away to corporations. It needs investment in local businesses, healthy communities, and sustainable futures for Modeste, Donaldsonville, and people across Ascension Parish.

Drew Hawkins, a reporter from Gulf State Newsroom has been reporting on the Landry administration’s policy of using NDA’s to push through industrial projects across the state for months now.

Our team alongside Rural Roots Louisiana and Center For Constitutional Rights have been working to unravel the threads of secrecy around deals regarding the proposed RiverPlex MegaPark in Ascension Parish that are being pushed through Governor Landry’s ‘Louisiana Lightening Speed’.

We have filed multiple public records requests to get information around the 2.6 Billion dollar public incentive package promised to Hyundai. Louisiana deserves transparency about what is happening to their land and communities.

Protecting Louisiana and defending communities from petrochemical expansion takes a lot of help from all sides and we couldn’t do this work without our incredible team and partners.

Spotlighting one today is Laurette Compass! She has been a powerhouse working along the Bucket Brigade team and Financial Advisors to research into the financial incentive packages and bonds that Louisiana has promised Hyundai as a part of the RiverPlex MegaPark. Her work has been crucial in getting us the information about what is really happening in those deals (Check out her video

The New York Times published an investigation into how, through NDAs, backroom negotiations, and a complete disregard for public process, Meta won in every regard for its $50 billion data center in Richland, Louisiana.

The project was pushed through at "Louisiana Lightning Speed" so the deal would be done before local residents even knew it was happening, let alone had a chance to organize.

Governor Landry and Louisiana Economic Development are using the same playbook across the state, including in Ascension Parish. The difference is: we're watching, and we're standing up.

As the RiverPlex MegaPark and proposed projects by Hyundai, Exxon, and CF Industries are pushed forward under the same veil of secrecy, we've joined with Rural Roots Louisiana and Center for Constitutional Rights to launch a barrage of public records requests, press investigations, and lawsuits aimed directly at this assault on transparency and democracy.

We will not roll over. Our communities are not sacrifice zones.
