French Quarter News

A group of pickpockets stole over 70 phones in the French Quarter over the weekend as residents and tourists flooded the streets during the height of Carnival season, the New Orleans Police Department said.

Four women and one man were arrested after detectives recovered 71 cell phones, multiple identification cards and credit cards that were believed to be stolen, police said.

The pickpocketing picked up in the French Quarter starting on Feb. 13, police said. Christian Noela, 31, Rosa Freire, 59, Fernanda Almagro, 24, Joselyn Soque, 29, and Andres Ambo Chacaguasay, 18, have all been arrested in connection with the thefts.

NOPD said they’ve returned some of the stolen property to its owners so far, but several items still need to be given back. If you believe your phone or phone case may be stolen, call the NOPD at (504) 658-6080 or visit the NOPD’s Eighth District headquarters at 334 Royal St.

Please join Downtown Development District of New Orleans and its partners at Canal Place and the Celebrate Canal! Coalition to welcome the holiday season and deck the streets of Downtown at our annual Lighting of Canal Street celebration on Tuesday, November 25, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at Canal Place Plaza (333 Canal Street).

This beloved neighborhood tradition invites New Orleanians to enjoy the commerce, culture, and community spirit of the Crescent City at a free, family-friendly event featuring live music from the Voices of St. Peter Claver Choir, hot cocoa from PJ's Coffee, sweet treats from Brasa New Orleans, and a special visit from Father Christmas himself.

The evening will culminate in the much-anticipated lighting of the Canal Street poles, when Downtown leaders and city officials flip the switch to illuminate the corridor in dazzling holiday decor for the remainder of the Christmas season.
