Together we can help kids get Ready for Reading in St. Bernard Parish!

Keeping Dolly’s Dream Alive in St. Bernard Parish

As the world mourns the passing of Dolly Parton, we are reminded that her greatest legacy may not be found in a song, on a stage, or beneath the lights, but in the hands of a child holding a book.

Dolly dreamed of children receiving a book with their own name on it and having someone they love sit beside them, turn the pages, and discover a story together.

Here in St. Bernard Parish, the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi helps make that dream a reality through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This mission gives every child who signs up, from birth through age five, a new, age-appropriate book mailed to them every month, completely FREE.

And this is a mission our business community can help carry forward.

Whether through donations, sponsorships, partnerships, or simply helping spread the word, our local businesses have an opportunity to invest in something incredibly powerful: the next generation of readers, learners, leaders, and dreamers in St. Bernard Parish.

The St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce is proud to support Kiwanis and the work they are doing to strengthen early childhood literacy in our community.

Dolly gave us the dream. Now it is up to communities like ours to keep turning the pages.

The Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi mourns with the world our beloved Dolly Parton. What a legacy of love she leaves in her songs and her kindness - the list of her attributes is long, but at the very top is her commitment to literacy through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Louisiana. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is available to children from birth until 5 years old; one free book is mailed directly to the child each month! That's 60 books over that timeframe - the child receives their own library of imagination gifted from Dolly! As the St. Bernard DPIL community partner, our Kiwanis club is committed to continue these efforts for generations to come. While we grieve the loss of such an amazing woman, we also know how blessed we are to have a little part of her heart right here for our kids. Dolly once said that she hopes that she will be "remembered more for her books than for her looks" and in our hearts, she will always be "the Book Lady."

Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children under the age of 5, was a labor of love spearheaded by the singer. The program is now available in almost every parish in Louisiana.

🎉 What a wonderful afternoon of fun, friendship, and bingo!
Our Kiwanians had the pleasure of hosting bingo at the Hannah Maner residents today, and the smiles around the tables said it all. Residents enjoyed good company, plenty of laughs, and of course… a few hard-fought “Bingo!” moments.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the day special and to the residents who welcomed us so warmly. These moments of connection are why we do what we do.

Our Kiwanis members had so much fun welcoming elementary kiddos back to schools throughout the parish last week! The Ready for Reading committee was also there to remind parents that
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Louisiana is available in our parish!
