George Washington Carver High School and Thrive New Orleans partnered during Love the Boot Week because we believe a stronger community starts with service. Together, 200 volunteers collected 1,825 pounds of litter throughout the Ninth Ward, helping create cleaner, safer spaces for our residents.

Our why is simple: to build community pride, environmental stewardship, and empower young people to take ownership of the neighborhoods they call home.

What started as a training opportunity became a home built with purpose.

After nine months of hands-on learning, students in the New Orleans Career Center (New Orleans Career Center) Building Trades Program presented the keys to a fully code-compliant tiny house they constructed from the ground up. From framing and roofing to electrical and HVAC installation, these young adults gained real-world skills while creating something that will have a lasting impact.

NOCC has donated the 288-square-foot tiny house to Thrive New Orleans, where it will serve as transitional housing for workforce training participants working to rebuild stability and create new opportunities for themselves.

Thank you to NOCC for making this vision a reality.

Another milestone achieved! Thrive proudly celebrated the completion of our 3rd cohort of Job Corps students earning their Clean Water Certificates through the Center for Watershed Protection. This cohort included 11 dedicated students who put in the work and took an important step toward building careers that strengthen both our workforce and our communities. We are proud of every graduate and excited to see how they will continue making an impact through environmental stewardship and clean water leadership. Congratulations to Cohort 3!

There’s something powerful about learning together. Thrive recently led Clear Water classes at Carver High School, where 12 students trained alongside their instructors to earn certifications together. Watching students and mentors learn side by side was special to see. Moments like these remind us what’s possible when young people are given the tools, support, and opportunities to succeed. We’re excited about what this can grow into and look forward to continuing to create pathways for the next generation.

Huge congratulations to Director of Youth Programs Dwana Caliste on two incredible and well-deserved honors!

Dwana has been recognized as a New Schools for New Orleans Spotlight Educator, a distinction that celebrates educators who are making a powerful impact and driving meaningful change in our schools every day.

On top of that, she has also received the Greater New Orleans Funders Network Restoration and Rejuvenation Initiative (R2I) Community Champion Distinguished Service Award: a testament to her unwavering commitment to uplifting her community. This honor not only recognizes her impact, but also invests in her wellbeing as a leader who continues to pour into others.

Your work is seen, your impact is real, and your community is stronger because of you.

We’re celebrating Dwana today and always!
