The First 72+

The First 72+ We're building a world where prior incarceration is no longer a barrier to secure housing, employment, and community acceptance. in New Orleans.
(1)

Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, The First 72+ was founded by and is run by Norris Henderson, Calvin Duncan, Kenneth Delosa, Pastor Tyrone Smith, and Ben Smith - all formerly incarcerated men trying to stop the cycle of incarceration by paying forward the support and guidance they recieved upon their release from prison. Through the genorocity of a local supporter The First 72+ opened up its first

transitional house on Perdido St. The house has five beds and on Sunday, July 20, 2014 got its first resident, Nathan Brown (a recent exoneree, and client of Innocence Project) who moved in after serving 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Clients and residents of The First 72+ recieve support during the first three days of their release including (but not limited to): transportation home from prison, clothes, food, transportation to social services offices (e.g. to get state identification, get a social security card, enrollment in public benefits, visits with parole/probation), and healthcare (mental, physical, dental) provided by local partners. After the first 72 hour stabilization period clients/residents will recieve support with connecting to education and/or employment, securing long term housing, programatic support (including healthy living, group therapy, parenting courses, financial literacy, healthy relationships/sexual health education, know your rights, etc.) provided in house and by local partners, and will be engaged in regular social events and community/civic engagement (to avoid clients/residents experiencing isolation upon release). Upon completion of the program all clients/residents will be considered alumni, and like the founders, are expected to remain involved and to "pay it forward." The First 72+ is a project of "The Next Generation of The Original Morning Star Baptist Church," an incorporated 501(c)(3).

Join us in welcoming Mr. Rodney Sherman to our transitional housing! After 25 years of incarceration, Mr. Rodney was released with no plan for where to sleep that night. Fortunately, while telling a friend about his situation, a connection at VOTE heard his story and referred him to The First 72+.

Mr. Rodney says, “God put me in that position so that I could come here.”

In his last week of residence at The First 72+, Mr. Rodney has been working with our Director of Economic Empowerment, Mr. Torrey, on job readiness skills. Mr. Torrey helped him create a resume, fill out job applications, and even taught Mr. Rodney how to tie a tie. After putting on his first professional suit from our clothing closet, Mr. Rodney had a job interview.

Mr. Rodney has been incarcerated since he was 17. He looks forward to getting a job and his own apartment, and eventually creating his own business.

On Thursday, The First 72+ was proud to go be a part of Docket Day at Reentry Court in Section K. Our Reentry Court Case Manager Troy has been working with the participants of this program to support their reentry to society from incarceration.

Thank you to Judge DeLarge for your leadership of this program, and for fighting for second chances!

Yesterday, we converted our Ben Smith Welcome Home Center into a market showcasing formerly incarcerated and justice-impacted art and entrepreneurship.

Many of our community members turn to entrepreneurship in the face of job discrimination. Through our Rising Artists’ Market, these skilled vendors were able to promote their art, build connections with our community, and make some sales!

Thank you to everyone who came, everyone who made purchases, and to our vendors for bringing their joy and art into our space.

Special thank you to for sponsoring this event.

Come support Mr. Kendrick and our other justice-impacted vendors at our Rising Artists’ Market today, 4-6pm, at 2915 Perdido St!

Our vendors will take home 100% of profits. Formerly incarcerated people face many barriers to fair employment — supporting their entrepreneurship supports their ability to make a livable income. We are excited to see you this afternoon, and excited to highlight our community members’ creativity! *BRING CASH IF YOU ARE ABLE TO*

We had a wonderful time celebrating our 9 Steps to Staying Free graduates on Sunday!

9 Steps to Staying Free is a weekly class led by Pastor Smith focused on peer support. Every Wednesday from 11-12:15, our justice-impacted community members gather over lunch to discuss topics such as positive mindsets, resilience, and honesty.

Thank you to our cofounder for an inspiring speech to the graduates, for reminding them to continue working hard and breaking barriers.
