Sankofa Nola

Sankofa Nola At Sankofa Community Development Corporation, we believe health to be the cornerstone of a thriving community.

Building healthier communities in the Lower Ninth Ward by connecting fresh food access, environmental restoration, economic opportunity, and cultural vitality for generations to come. When individuals are healthy, relationships function better, families operate more easily and communities are more cohesive. This creates opportunities for increased safety, stability and overall viability. In holdin

g with foundational principles of community development, we believe that the power for true transformation lies within the community. We therefore work with residents and other stakeholders to identify locally felt social challenges and address them in thoughtful, culturally competent ways. We understand the power of the built environment in shaping health and therefore partner with other traditional community development organizations and non-profits to address the β€œsocial determinants of health” that trigger inequities. For us, the ultimate goal is to support the creation of a local environment that promotes positive health outcomes and builds healthier communities for generations to come. The Sankofa Community Development Corporation (CDC) is a 501 (c) 3 non – profit organization founded in 2008 by Rashida Ferdinand in alliance with community stakeholders in the Lower Ninth area following the Hurricane Katrina disaster to support health-centered community and economic development in the area.

This past Saturday, we welcomed the Greater New Orleans Foundation Impact 100 members to Sankofa Wetland Park & Nature Trail for a morning of connection, exploration, and learning.

They experienced firsthand how this community-led space is bringing together environmental restoration, STEM education, and conservation to create lasting change in the Lower Ninth Ward and across our region.

Partnerships like these help strengthen our mission to build healthier communities for generations to come. From restoring native wetlands and expanding wildlife habitats to creating outdoor learning opportunities for future generations, Sankofa CDC represents what is possible when we invest in people, nature, and community.

πŸ¦…πŸŒΏ Meet our June SANKOFA Bird of the Month: the Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus).

Jason Day, Wetland Biologist with Comite Resources, recently spotted the Swallow-tailed Kite for the first time at Sankofa Wetland Park & Nature Trail:

"For me, the Swallow-tailed Kite represents the start of summer. When the warm winds begin to blow around May, I start looking upward to welcome our summer resident to the wetlands of Sankofa. It’s a majestic flyer with a striking V-shaped tail and black-and-white coloration. It performs aerial acrobatics while hunting for insects to eat."

Want to see the Swallow-tailed Kite and discover the many other birds that call our wetlands home? Join us this Saturday, June 13, from 9 AM–12 PM for Second Saturday at Sankofa Wetland Park & Nature Trail. 🌱

Though the wildlife of Sankofa will be just fine, we have decided that the inclement weather headed for the area this weekend is just too hazardous for our two-legged friends! 🌧️

While we are disappointed we won’t be able to gather together for Bayou Fest this year, the safety of our community, partners, volunteers, and visitors comes first. πŸ’š

Come visit us on a clear day! β˜€οΈ

Meet the baby catfish (also called fiddlers) helping keep our wetlands healthy. 🐟

These tiny ecosystem helpers play an important role beneath the surface:

🌱 Natural Population Control: Young catfish consume aquatic insects, snails, and small crustaceans, preventing these organisms from overpopulating and damaging the ecosystem.

♻️ Bottom-Up Nutrient Recycling: As they forage, they help break down detritus and recycle organic matter back into the food web.

πŸ¦… Supporting Wildlife: As a highly abundant forage fish, baby catfish are a vital protein source for native predators like wading birds, otters, and larger predatory fish.

Every species plays a role in restoring and strengthening this living ecosystem.
