✨ Save the date for our closing plenary✨

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the start of Sustaining Change - webinar series. This was like a Beloved March Madness 🤓 and we’re encouraged that so many of our partners have found value in each of these talks. Stay tuned for a big recap after Spring Break. 🌺

We’re not saying we saved the best for last, buuut our final conversation about community-engaged research is going to tie it all together. You could apply a community-engaged research lens to design a rest infrastructure, to make meaning of good jobs strategies, and to identify culturally relevant and affirming mental health care for Black men and boys.

So let’s talk about it.

Sustaining Change continues today with “The Mental Health Crisis for Black Men and Boys: What’s our work to do?”

Did you know that suicidal incidents for Black boys - age 10-19 - have increased 60% in the past 30 years?

We invite our education, youth development, and workforce partners to join us today for this critical conversation. This plenary will provide insight, research, and resources for how to recognize unique needs, ask different questions of our data, and embed mental health supports in direct service programs.

Last week Beloved Board member Dorian Spears and CEO Rhonda Broussard were guest speakers at Résolutions with La Passerelle- IDÉ, a French-English bilingual conference with the theme « Vers une francophonie ancrée et inclusive | Towards a Rooted and Inclusive Francophonie. » Résolutions was a unique opportunity to explore collective impact solutions that center Ontario’s racialized francophone immigrant community. We’re looking forward to building more shared solutions with Leonie Tchatat, Kenza, Guy, Wissam, Rose and their team.

The American Job Quality Study reveals that 60% of U.S. workers lack quality jobs. For workers this goes beyond compensation and benefits and means lower well-being and lower job satisfaction. For employers it raises concerns about retention, productivity, and business performance.

How can we sustain change in our work if we’re not able to sustain our actual workforce? Join us for a conversation with leaders from organizations that are passionate about investing in the local workforce and identifying solutions that benefit workers and ultimately, the economy. Whether you’re working on career pathways for youth or our most marginalized populations, this plenary will equip you with questions to ask of your local data and innovative approaches for hard -to-reach workers.

Clair Minson, Principal of Sandra Grace, LLC, a strategic consultant in workforce development strategy, philanthropic infrastructure, and direct programming will moderate this talk with researchers Sara Sands Francis and Patrick Gill at Good Reason Houston and programmatic strategist Nicole Masters at REDF. Join us to learn about how they’re leveraging research and data to reach our most vulnerable worker populations.

✨ Meet the Speakers ✨

When people who are newer to Beloved learn about our sabbatical practice, they often ask for resources. We have anecdotes and lived experiences, but we have yet to develop a resource to share about how to create your own sabbaticals. Enter our Rest as Infrastructure speakers. 🎉🎉 Not only have they been intentional about their design, commitment, and research on rest, but they’ve literally created the blueprint for how to invest in our rest. We’re in good hands.

Gabrielle Wyatt is an investor, futurist, strategist, and founder of The Highland Project, an ecosystem designed to build and accelerate multigenerational wealth in Black communities and beyond. Rooted equally in imagination and infrastructure, her work sits at the intersection of legacy, rest, radical possibility, and community wealth creation.

Abby Hyman manages The Healing Trust’s work beyond grantmaking that supports the care and capacity of grantees, including technical assistance, leadership circles, and Healing for the Healer retreats. She manages The Trust’s Culture and Care Fund and the Sabbatical Fund in collaboration with other funders at the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

Stella Chung oversees the Durfee Foundation’s grantmaking initiatives and manages the Sabbatical and Stanton programs, which support extraordinary leaders advancing a brighter future in Los Angeles. She also co-created the Lark program, a grant dedicated to the collective care and renewal of staff at small, Los Angeles-based nonprofit organizations.

Jodi Nishioka, Co-Director at Ile Kimoyo enjoys her work because it combines her legal skills with her dedication to building power in communities, and especially in communities of color.

How can we sustain change if we’re not able to sustain our actual leaders? Join us for a conversation with four organizations who are passionate about investing in rest as an antidote to burnout. We’ve already learned so much from them about the infrastructure that facilitates rest — we can’t wait to bring our community along with us. Whether you’re planning your first sabbatical, reflecting on your current rest resources, or starting a rest advocacy campaign — this plenary will help you on the next step in your rest foundation.

Gabrielle Wyatt at The Highland Project that pairs catalytic dream capital with rest practices will moderate this talk with leaders like Stella Chung at The Durfee Foundation who has funded leader sabbaticals for 30 years, Abby Hyman at The Healing Trust who is leading on rest investments in Tennessee, and Jodi Nishioka at Ile Kimoyo where they’ve designed rest infrastructure for BIPOC leaders.

At Beloved, we’ve always been committed to social change and in particular to inquiries around how communities sustain change.  When the charismatic leader leaves, the funding stream ends, and the legislation changes will we keep doing the work?  We haven’t figured it all out yet and, in fact, we have more questions than when we started.  We do know that, whether you’re in education, workforce or clean energy, there are some building blocks that matter.

Join us for Sustaining Change - a limited webinar series - where we explore those building blocks with some of our beloved partners.

✨We believe that people change systems - so we have to invest in the people.

✨We believe that the future of work requires changing the systems, not just the workers.

✨We know that our intersectional identities impact the ways that systems see us, don’t see and treat us.

✨We know that our communities have the answers.

Join us for Sustaining Change online to get resources and get resourced.  Come for the community.  If you’ve spent time with us online, you know we’re going to bless the chat and send everyone back to work feeling connected and inspired.

Bold Bars, Brilliant Teachers: AFIA Inspires at Amplify! 🔥

Shout-out to Dr. Muhammad and Mrs. Jones for sharing their innovative work! They presented “Bold Bars: A Therapeutic Release Through Rhyme” at the Annual Amplify Conference—and attendees loved it.

Their presentation highlighted how our Hip Hop Literacy program engages students deeply, proving that creativity supports both literacy development and therapeutic expression.

We also hosted 25 conference attendees for classroom visits. Thank you to our staff and performing students for showcasing the magic of AFIA.

We have all been there, right? You have entered a new phase of your professional journey and you are now expected to manage fellow humans. Your first thought might be excitement or sheer terror. Managing people is hard. Full stop. Period. One of the crucial aspects of managing a team of people is training and developing them into a strong team of individuals who center excellence and accountability in the workplace. Notice I said excellence, and not perfection. Perfection is a tool of white supremacy culture and is unattainable (Okun, n.d). If you build a team with an expectation of perfection, they will always fall short and team culture will crumble, but centering excellence in your training and development process will yield great results.

We’re always learning from Dr. Nicole Caridad Ralston, Kevin Lewis, and Shawn Gaines. If you’re managing your first team in higher ed setting, you should be too. Starting with their book chapter in
Ten Steps Toward Greater Operational Efficiency in Higher Education: An Administrator Playbook. 🤓📚https://www.routledge.com/Ten-Steps-Toward-Greater-Operational-Efficiency-in-Higher-Education-An-Administrator-Playbook/Gooden-Hoffshire/p/book/9781032876177

“Too often, the economic benefits of our signature industries do not translate into opportunity or stability for those workers, particularly Black residents and women. This isn’t anecdotal, it’s backed by data showing persistent patterns of economic inequality that shape who gets ahead in our city.”

Good jobs matter for all of us. Even beyond our Mardi Gras and tourism industry, how would it transform New Orleans if our city honored the labour contributions of all workers?

Congratulations to Stephanie R. Taylor on her new role as Chief Operating Officer for YMCA of Central Florida of Central Florida! Leading systems for smooth operations is no small feat and we’re excited for the impact she’ll have on youth and families in Orlando.

For over 135 years, the YMCA of Central Florida has been a trusted leader in strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. With 14 family centers and two licensed early learning centers (on Walt Disney World property!), the Y serves six counties across the Orlando region and reaches approximately 150,000 people annually, with a bold goal of extending its reach to 500,000 people by 2033.
