Our members just UNANIMOUSLY approved the first collective bargaining agreement for higher ed faculty in the state of Louisiana!

We voted to ratify a contract that holds Tulane accountable—both to newly established checks and balances within our own contract and to their their own rules and procedures. We voted for a contract that establishes transparency around everything from job descriptions to course assignments to promotion and renewal requirements. We voted for a contract that raises the salary floor for our most exploited and underpaid colleagues. We voted for a contract that guarantees us academic freedom and the right to participate in faculty shared governance. We voted for all this and so much more!

Over the past three years, we organized our union, met with our employer at the bargaining table, and negotiated a contract with one of the largest employers in the city of New Orleans. At times, it felt like the odds were stacked against us, but we didn’t let that discourage us. And here we are—we did it. This entire process has shown us, with absolute clarity, that when we work together, we really can change our world for the better.

We did it!

After three years of organizing our Union and bargaining with our employer, we have made history by reaching a complete tentative agreement on our first contract. This moment marks a monumental shift in power for workers at Tulane and in New Orleans, and it proves that when we work together we can change our living and working conditions for the better. The odds may be stacked against us, but there is strength in unity, and a better world is possible.

We are incredibly proud of the work our members and bargaining team have done to negotiate and finalize this contract, and we are so proud to announce this FIRST EVER higher ed faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement in the state of Louisiana!

Solidarity forever!

One more time, with a photo for the algorithm!

This May Day, we're joining in solidarity with immigrants and workers across the city of New Orleans because we believe that when workers unite, a better New Orleans is possible. We're calling on Tulane students, faculty, staff, and community members to join us!

We'll be providing bus service from Tulane University to the event downtown, and we need to know how many busses to book, so please RSVP today! (RSVP link in bio.)

Last Thursday, our members rallied in support of academic freedom! After delivering a petition signed by the majority of Tulane non-tenure track faculty to President Fitts and Provost Foreman (they even sent police to es**rt us!), we marched down St. Charles Avenue and into contract negotiations with Tulane’s administration.

Our demand is simple: Tulane must make a binding commitment to academic freedom by including it in our collective bargaining agreement.

Academic freedom is of critical importance to both students and faculty: It means that faculty can conduct research and teach freely and truthfully. It means students can learn in an atmosphere free of censorship. Academic freedom is what distinguishes universities from corporate think tanks, and it is now more important than ever that universities make a commitment to uphold academic freedom. Given Tulane’s recent track record of gag orders and censorship, we know that a binding commitment to academic freedom is absolutely necessary.

We hope you’ll join us in demanding ACADEMIC FREEDOM NOW!

Today TWU members visited the offices of President Fitts and Provost Forman to make sure our message sticks: Academic Freedom Now! Living Wage Now! Fair Contract Now!

Since fall 2024, we have been negotiating our first collective bargaining agreement with Tulane University. While we have successfully leveraged our collective power to secure some significant improvements in our working conditions, Tulane remains opposed to a number of issues that are of critical importance to our membership: most centrally, wages and academic freedom.

In a city that grows more expensive every day, many of our faculty work second jobs to make ends meet. While we must fight to secure even the smallest salary increases, President Fitts received a 77% raise this year, bringing his total compensation to over $3 million. Tulane has the money, and it's time they begin paying their faculty fairly.

While Tulane loves to give lip service to academic freedom, they have refused to enshrine any such commitments in our contract. In an era where academic freedom is under threat from both federal and state lawmakers, it is critical that universities protect the rights of their faculty to engage in open and honest academic inquiry. Rather than protecting free discourse and academic integrity at a time when it is most need, Tulane has fostered a culture of fear and censorship.

Join us in demanding that Tulane University make a commitment to fair compensation, academic freedom, and a fair contract now!

We spent the past weekend talking with hundreds of parents, students, and alumni who had gathered on Tulane's campus for homecoming. We told them about our current fight to win equitable wages, academic freedom, and other protections.

We were moved by the overwhelming support those we spoke to expressed--but we weren't surprised by it. Our students get it, their parents get it, and our graduates get it: Faculty at a world-class university shouldn't have to drive for Uber on the side to pay their rent.

Homecoming is a time when Tulane flaunts its wealth. Tulane rolls out the red carpet and transforms its campus to impress its donors and everyone else who visits the university. All we're asking for is a small share of that wealth--enough to live comfortably, to work just one job, and to save a little bit for our futures. As one parent put it, "When faculty are paid fairly, everybody wins." It's true. When faculty aren't struggling to make ends meet, they're able to invest more in their students. Faculty working conditions are student learning conditions. We hope you'll support us as we fight not only for fair compensarion, but for a better Tulane for everyone.

If you think faculty deserve a living wage, tell us why in the comments!

We're on Freret talking to students, fans, and parents about why Tulane faculty need a living wage. Come say hi!
