To my abolition organizers in the Metro Detroit Area, check this out.

I am sharing the exciting news that Reimagining Safety Michigan (RSM) is publicly launching with two events!! For over a year and a half, the 9 organizations that make up RSM have convened to build a bold and beautiful vision and pathway for a Michigan that does not rely on policing and prisons, and instead moves us toward a culture of care, collective governance, and community accountability.

If you’re not familiar with us, check out our new and budding website in the comments to learn more about who we are and what we’re up to. This is just the beginning! At our Kick-off in April, we will launch a multitude of resources and tools we've created for and with community, inclusive of:
*A Platform of Abolitionist Priorities for Michigan.

*Calls-to-Action in this election year for the Governor and Attorney General.

*An accompanying Toolkit with a transformative evaluative rubric, voter education resources, and somatic exercises.

*A Power Map that maps the money and authority of the Michigan carceral system.

*A Landscape Map of abolitionist committed organizations + practitioners in Michigan

We truly cannot wait to share all of this with you and to break bread together! We are excited to be in conversation with you about *all* of the good work we're collectively up to and we are grateful to offer these resources, especially during this particularly painful and chaotic time and context.

~YOU’RE INVITED~

You and your colleagues, networks, and communities are invited to join us for a Kick-off and Training on April 12th and a Mass Convening for abolitionist practitioners and groups on May 16th. Check out our Events Page for more info and to register in advance! We can’t wait to see you there!

📚✈️ T.I.M.E. Minded’s 2025 Backpack Fundraiser is here!

We’re working to donate 350 backpacks filled with school supplies to students at Ulster Spring Primary and Infant School and Sawyers Primary and Infant School in Trelawny, Jamaica.

This student-led effort by Wayne State University is about more than backpacks—it’s about giving young people the tools they need to dream, learn, and succeed. 🌍✨

💚 Every donation counts. Help us make a difference!

🚨 TONIGHT: Safe Space Conversation on Domestic Violence 🚨
This evening at 7:00 PM EST (Sunday, August 24th), I will be going LIVE with “Kay” (name changed for privacy), a former girlfriend of Mario Green.

For those who may not know, Mario Green is the man who tragically walked into Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit last Friday, August 22nd, and fatally shot his ex-wife, Latricia Green (Brown), during a targeted act of domestic violence. Latricia, who worked in housekeeping at the hospital, had previously filed for protection against him, but the order was never served. Mario was arrested early Saturday morning after a citywide manhunt.
Kay will bravely share her own story of a similar entanglement with Mario—how she once had to get a restraining order against him and even survived an incident where he pulled a gun on her.
This conversation is not only about Kay’s courage, but also about highlighting the ongoing dangers of domestic violence, the failures of our protective systems, and the urgent need for change.

📍 We go LIVE via:

📝 Drop your questions for Kay in the comments, and join us for this important dialogue tonight.

Success Story!
Last year, Kevin Duane Quiroz—a celebrity photographer originally from Saginaw, Michigan, now living in Houston, Texas—visited our booth and shared that he had a criminal record from his time in Saginaw. He was seeking assistance to find out whether he might be eligible for expungement.

One year later—here in 2025—we’re excited to share that Kevin is now eligible! Thanks to our partners at Safe & Just Michigan, especially Kamau Sandiford, who reviewed Kevin’s case and confirmed his eligibility.

Kevin is now one step closer to a fresh start. He’s looking forward to clearing his record, securing a home for his family, and providing a brighter future for his daughter. Most of all, he’s excited to live without fear or shame—no longer worried about what might show up if someone runs a background check on him.

The essence of Black women? Unmatched.✨
Bold. Soft. Powerful. Rooted.
Every woman who stopped by our booth at Essence Festival brought beauty, brilliance, and truth.

We honor your stories, your strength, and your magic—because the world moves through the rhythm of Black women.

Meet a brother who knows the system far too well. He’s formerly incarcerated—and both of his brothers are currently behind bars.

This is the reality for so many Black families: entire households impacted by incarceration, generation after generation.

We see him. We hear him. We fight with him.

She stood with strength and grace, carrying a story no mother should have to tell.

Her son was incarcerated—and he lost his life while inside. 💔

At Michigan Liberation, we are reminded daily that our fight is not just policy—it’s people. Real families. Real pain. And a deep, urgent need to build a world rooted in care, not cages.

We honor her son’s memory and stand with every family who’s endured this kind of loss.

Rooted in love, resilience, and liberation.
We met these powerful women from Texas here at Essence Festival 2025 in New Orleans. Two of them shared that their brother was incarcerated — a reminder of why we do this work.

At Michigan Liberation, we fight every day to end mass incarceration and uplift the stories of families impacted by the system.

🌟We’re HERE, New Orleans!🌟

Michigan Liberation has landed at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture to uplift Black mamas, Black freedom, and our vision of care—not cages. Through our Black Mama’s Bail Out campaign, we’ve reunited over 100 Black mothers with their families since 2019.

Did you know? 1 in 4 women in jail haven’t been convicted of a crime—many are simply there because they can’t afford bail. This injustice is exactly why we fight.

This weekend, we’re standing boldly in the legacy of liberation, challenging wealth-based detention, and centering the leadership of Black women impacted by incarceration. ✊🏾 Stay tuned—we’re just getting started.
