On this day, 20 years ago, Hurricane Katrina left an indelible mark on the Gulf Coast, especially New Orleans. Beyond the destruction, the storm sparked an extraordinary wave of resilience and renewal—one of the most inspiring being the creation of Youth Rebuilding New Orleans.
Born out of the disaster, Youth Rebuilding New Orleans (YRNO) was founded to empower young people to directly participate in the city’s recovery. These young leaders—many of them displaced by the storm themselves—rolled up their sleeves to rebuild homes, restore neighborhoods, and bring hope back to their communities.
YRNO isn’t just about construction; it’s about building a generation of change-makers who understand the power of collective action, resilience, and the importance of giving back. What started as a response to crisis has grown into a movement of young people leading the way in community development, making sure the voices of those most affected by the storm are never left out of the conversation.
As we remember the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, we also celebrate the spirit of hope, rebuilding, and leadership—especially the youth who continue to shape the future of New Orleans.
