Hey Neighbors!
We’re not great about posting, so here’s a rundown of what the Men’s Club has been up to this year.
Since January 24th we’ve filled the two food pantries 32 weekends in a row, working with the Algiers Point Free Little Pantry.
February was the annual Pillage of the Eastbank, our revenge for the unprovoked cannon attack on our neighborhood. About 150ish years ago, drunk guys in Jackson Square packed a cannon with so much powder that when fired, the cannonball sailed across the Mississippi and hit a poor old lady’s house on Alix St. That really happened. The Eastbank will never be forgiven.
In March we finished the planting around the monument at Triangle Park, funded by the Algiers Point Association, Keep Algiers Beautiful, and our own dues.
April was a crawfish boil for members and their families. Bargeboard hosted us and we appreciate it.
May is for the moms.
In June we cleared the dirt and trash out of storm drains around the neighborhood. We do it ahead of hurricane season, but it’s worth checking the ones by your house before a heavy rain. Leaves and litter can partially block them again within a week.
We also played paintball.
July is too hot.
In August, we had a family river float on the Bogue Chitto.
A couple of things people usually ask about:
Dues are $100 a year. If money’s tight and you still want in, talk to one of the officers and we’ll work it out.
There’s a business meeting at Mt. Olivet every other month. It’s not a big time commitment. That’s when we do all our coordinating, so it’s good to make them, but it’s not mandatory. The business meetings are members only but if you’re ready to join, we are actually meeting this Wednesday at Mt. Olivet - meeting starts at 8:00.
The point of the club is to try to make the neighborhood better through sweat equity and building old school neighborly relationships with our fellow Point Algerines.
We try to have a good mix of work and play, and even when the Westwego PD give us a brake tag ticket while picking up crawfish, we succeed.
