Producing Artistic Director Lauren Turner Hines began developing Freedom Mapping, in this context, in 2019 after her own exit from a harmful institution. The framing is rooted in ancestral escape strategy and built for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color healing from and exiting toxic institutions.

Context matters. No Dream Deferred was the result of Freedom Mapping in practice, led by Lauren Turner Hines in collaboration with the theatre producers, directors, and artists who were part of the organization’s genesis.

This container is squarely within No Dream Deferred’s mission and vision. As the organization iterates on its next phase of how it shows up in artistic practice and in community, robust community input is invited and expected on what this should look like, feel like, and how its utility is designed.

In 2026, we’re going to need all the tools our collective brilliance can muster.

Honoring the Life and Legacy of Our Beloved Elder, Now Ancestor, Chakula Cha Jua

Today, we remember and honor all the contributions of Chakula Cha Jua to the development of No Dream Deferred. His belief in next-generation leadership served as the battery pack on our backs, and his unwavering support given in every way he could has been invaluable.

We were deeply honored to produce his beloved Ritual Murder by Tom Dent in 2019 as part of the Words and Music Festival and even more joy-filled to be able to acknowledge and celebrate Chakula in 2023 at the inaugural Liberation Ball as part of the WE WILL DREAM: New Works Festival. Though our hearts are heavy, we remain undeterred, knowing that his guidance will continue to lead us in the next realm. We love you Chakula.

Our Story

No Dream Deferred is a New Orleans based theatre production company that prioritizes cultural relevancy for our community audience as well as theatrical works written by playwrights that have been historically marginalized.

We recognize the systemic nature of cultural marginalization in the arts and therefore, we fight to create and to create as often as we please so that our stories are told and our dreams are never deferred.

No Dream Deferred strives to be an artistic home to theatre-makers of color in New Orleans, a place where our stories are authentically realized and wonderfully experienced.
