Project Butterfly New Orleans

Project Butterfly New Orleans PBNOLA frequently uses media, creative and performing arts, entrepreneurship, yoga, meditation, and other creative formats to engage girls on these issues.

Project Butterfly New Orleans (PBNOLA) is an African-centered rites of passage program designed to prepare girls of African descent for their transition from adolescence to adulthood. Project Butterfly New Orleans (PBNOLA) has been in existence since January of 2009 and uses the Project Butterfly curriculum and other evidence-based youth development strategies to address key issues impacting the d

evelopment of girls of African descent. The program currently supports girls in grades 9-12 with plans to expand to serve girls in grades 6-12. Project Butterfly is a nationally-recognized curriculum developed by Niambi Jaha Echols and Gwen Luster that is designed to assist girls of African descent in their transition from adolescence to adulthood. This curriculum is designed to address girls’ personal development and self-esteem and addresses topics such as the influence of media on girls and women, body image, girls’ health, effective decision-making, spirituality, and many other topics relevant to adolescent girls.

What a joy to celebrate our Butterflies in Training at the College Track New Orleans Launch to College Ceremony! 🦋

Several of our young people were acknowledged for their college acceptances to institutions including Middlebury College and San Francisco Bay University. Watching them be celebrated for their hard work, persistence, and next steps reminded us why this work matters so deeply.

We are also proud to celebrate our Executive Director, Michele Seymour, who was honored with the Hero Award. This award recognizes a local leader who demonstrates outstanding service to the community, opens opportunities, mentors students, and helps scholars stay persistent on the path to college, career, and lifelong success.

Thank you, College Track New Orleans, for creating such a powerful space to honor young people, community, and the village that helps make these milestones possible.

Our butterflies are taking flight. 🦋✨

Thank you to everyone who donated so far! As we wind down GiveNOLA Day, we wanted to share this final highlight: We recently culminated our 15th year of programming at College Track New Orleans with our Tea Party celebration, honoring 15 butterflies-in-training. 🦋

The day included a custom tea lab with Dr. Amina Desselle of Antidoteshop.co and our signature flower ceremony, where each butterfly-in-training was celebrated for their personality, gifts, and growth.

This is what Project Butterfly New Orleans does.

We create space for young people to be seen.
We celebrate who they are.
We pour into who they are becoming.

This GiveNOLA Day, help us keep this beloved work blooming.

Today is GiveNOLA Day! 🦋

Project Butterfly New Orleans is raising $5,000 to continue our 15+ year partnership with College Track New Orleans.

This year, we have served 45 butterflies-in-training across College Track New Orleans and Daughters Beyond Incarceration, and we are asking our community to help us keep this work blooming.

✨ YOU’RE INVITED! ✨

Join us for the final Community Collage Club session and celebration as we come together to create a collage quilt, a shared tapestry of our stories, healing, resistance, and joy.

Rooted in the tradition of African American quilting, this gathering honors the power of community memory and artistic expression. Just like our ancestors stitched together found materials to tell their truths, we will layer our visions to craft something powerful together.

🖼️✨ Summer magic in motion!
Our Community Collage Club is off to an amazing start with 20+ attendees at our first two sessions! From teens to elders, we’ve been gathering weekly to reflect, vision, and create together through collage.

The energy has been nothing short of beautiful being full of joy, laughter, and deep connection across generations.

We’ve also been able to provide sustaining snacks and transportation support to help youth show up fully. Because when our basic needs are met, we’re free to create, connect, and just be.

Free summer programming matters. Free summer spaces give young people and community a chance to heal and grow in supportive spaces without worrying about the cost. It’s not extra, it’s essential.

We hope to see you this Saturday at from 2:00-4:00 PM!
