Chase’s friend Henry got to go on a great adventure to Spellers Camp!!! 🙌🔡♥️
Some solid advice.
Jakob made a new friend at camp. His name is Henry. They have some things in common.
Henry has autism and apraxia and he’s a non-speaker. And he and Jakob both communicate by spelling words one letter at a time with the support of a trained communication partner.
They had a wonderful conversation.
Henry has been struggling at school like so many spellers do. Administrators and staff don’t understand apraxia and the brain-body disconnect, they don’t know how to best support, they misunderstand and underestimate, and they aren’t willing to learn.
It’s maddening. If Jakob were still in school and we were dealing with all that crap, I’m not sure what I would do. Probably pull him out.
Or fight like hell to change the system.
Jakob had the opportunity to chat to Henry about it. I love what he had to tell him.
“You have the strength in you. I know the school years are painfully slow. But i can assure you that it is temporary. Adulting is so much better. Hang in there and save your energy for those who believe in you. Forget about those who don't as they will only have a spot in your history books.”
And Henry’s reply?
“My history will be filled with the best because of my mom being there.
Thank you for your expertise.”
Camp.
It’s just the best.💙
