Scheduled to appear before U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement this morning, El Salvadoran construction worker and human rights leader Jose Torres sought indefinite sanctuary at First Grace United Methodist Church in Mid-City. “I have decided to take sanctuary because I have two babies who need me. They're destroying me totally as the father of a family. I feel terrible — they're removing me from my daughters' lives. That is why I am fighting against these injustices.”

Fearing deportation to his violent homeland, a Salvadoran construction worker announced Wednesday he is seeking sanctuary at a New Orleans church.

NGA director Saket Soni calls out Bob Goodlatte's new guestworker proposal for the disaster it is:

“A massive expansion like this is a greater opportunity to exploit a greater number of people all at once,” says Saket Soni. “It takes the worst provisions of current migrant worker programs and bundles them into some sort of toxic policy cocktail.”

It's competitive disadvantage versus "human dignity at work." And it could change everything for the people who produce what we eat.

LOVE WINS in Louisiana! Teaming up with National Immigration Law Center and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, the New Orleans Workers' Center for Racial Justice legal department brought home a huge win for immigrant justice this week: the Bayou State can no longer deny foreign-born US citizens who cannot produce a birth certificate the right to marry.

Together, we win. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/louisiana/articles/2017-08-09/judge-blocks-law-requiring-birth-certificates-to-marry

Two filmmakers are raising $500,000 to enable them to pay a diverse group of 20 subjects throughout the United States $250 a week for two years, a grassroots universal basic income experiment. They plan to document what having a basic income will do in the 20 individuals' lives, and will release a documentary about the project during the 2020 election. The filmmakers point out that for UBI to ever be viable, it must move from the elitist spheres of academia and Silicon Valley to the hearts and minds of everyday Americans.
