Week three of Women’s History Month we’re traveling to Cuba! Ninety miles off the coast of Miami and home to a vibrant culture of artists, activists, and culture bearers. Like all of the countries highlighted this month, Cuba is currently being subjected to the horrors of American imperialism. They are suffering a blockade that is making every day life impossible if not deadly.

There are many groups doing what they can to break this siege, one of which is operating out of New Orleans. fly’s to Cuba’s aid on April 9th. Please go to their page to see how you can help!

This week we travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the second largest country in Africa, and one of the worlds largest providers of cobalt.

The beautiful land and rich resources of the Congo are coveted and extracted by tech oligarchs the world over, and the citizens suffer for it. You may have seen images of emaciated elementary age children from the Congo on your feeds or heard activists beg for people to “talk about what happening in Congo”. Every time you go out to buy the newest Apple product or ride in a Tesla, you are benefitting from the extraction of cobalt.

In this post we bring attention to some of the women activists and artists that are fighting back against colonial oppression and subjugation. As well as bringing joy and playfulness to the world. Please take a moment to find someone here whose work piques your interest!

Welcome to Women’s History Month. LOUD is honoring this month by highlighting women across the world, with an emphasis on those living under the oppression of the brutal regime of the United States government.

This week we’re focusing on Iran. In this post you’ll find women activists, musicians, authors, and filmmakers. The artistic works featured also center the women and girls of Iran. Our hope is that through engaging with the thoughts and creations of Iranian women we can bridge any perceived gaps created by culture, race, religion, or propaganda.

For the last two weeks of Black History Month we wanted to discuss people who are still living. Black History hasn’t stopped!

Angela Davis is a living legend. She’s written multiple books on a variety of topics: Feminism, Race, Class, Palestine & Prisons as a few examples. She is one of our most forward thinkers on prison abolition and intersectionality.

To finish off the first half of Black History Month we have the incomparable Josephine Baker. From Vaudeville to Theater to Cabaret she made every stage her home.

As many of you already know she was a spy for the French during WWII. Communicating vital information about the plans and movements of the Nazi’s through her lyrics and with secret notes stashed on her person!

When she returned to the U.S. she was a huge voice for the civil rights movement, and after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr she was asked to take up the mantle of the movement, though she declined.

After her passing one of her sons made it clear that her love saw no gender, she shared connections with men and women during her lifetime. There is so much more to say about this incredible woman. If you haven’t, please do your own research, there is no end to the marvel that is Josephine Baker.

Today we honor Lady Chablis! A pioneer for southern q***r culture and a powerhouse performer! She was known as the “Grand Empress” of Club One in Savannah where she performed from 1988 to 2016 when she was hospitalized. She was Club One’s first entertainer and performed on their opening night.

In the early 1990’s she was featured in John Berendt’s book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which went on to become a movie in 1997, where Chablis played herself. Her autobiography, Hiding My Candy, was released in 1996 where she details her life in her own words!
