Birdfoot Festival Archive We bring artists and audiences together to create and experience dynamic live chamber music and unforgettable musical journeys.

New Orleans’ International Chamber Music Festival, the Birdfoot Festival is recognized for its fresh approach and “youthful, rule-bending style," bringing artists and audiences together to make and experience dynamic live chamber music. Birdfoot’s playful and engaging performances connect the timeless themes of classic masterpieces with contemporary sounds, creating unforgettable musical journeys.

Celebrating its fifth season, Birdfoot has presented over forty concerts and events and drawn artists and audiences from across the nation and five continents. Art in the Making:
The Birdfoot Festival provides a creative haven where leading international artists collaborate, exchange ideas, and share the exciting results through community performances. In addition to its annual festival each May, Birdfoot hosts two artist residencies and multiple performances throughout the year. New Orleans Flavor:
Named for the branching footprint of the Mississippi river delta, Birdfoot draws inspiration from New Orleans’ live-music culture, presenting chamber music in intimate venues. Listeners are invited into the creative process and artists and audiences mingle and chat after concerts, sometimes late into the night. Education and Inspiration:
Birdfoot’s Young Artist Program challenges dedicated young music students to expand their musical abilities, imagination, and leadership skills through intensive chamber music coachings, workshops, and masterclasses led by international-caliber musicians.

“... fiery, committed, intensely personal readings...the risk-taking energy was palpable...”

“Birdfoot delivered what I want from any Louisiana festival” —Chris Waddington, Times Picayune

Birdfoot Says Goodbye

We are sad to announce that after twelve years of music-making, Birdfoot Festival is coming to an end. Read the full announcement here: https://birdfootfestival.org/birdfoot-says-goodbye/

While this is very sad news, even good things don’t last forever.

As Birdfoot says goodbye, there is so much to celebrate—the musical experiences and unforgettable moments we have shared.

On behalf of Birdfoot’s founders, staff, and Board, a huge thank you to all of you who have made Birdfoot possible in ways both big and small:

• All 113 of Birdfoot’s musicians and artistic collaborators

• The restaurants, hotels, local businesses, and community partners who have enabled Birdfoot to perform all over New Orleans.

• All the volunteers, and especially Birdfoot's extraordinary Kitchen Krewe.

• Birdfoot’s staff members past and present.

• Birdfoot's founding Executive Director, Tracey Sherry.

• YOU, the festival's friends and fans for your generous financial gifts and all your other contributions to twelve wonderful years of Birdfoot Festival. Thank you for helping spread so much musical joy.

Birdfoot Festival has been an ongoing experiment. Your enthusiasm has proved the festival’s founding concept—that chamber music performed with imagination and heart can bring people together in truly meaningful ways.

We would love to hear from you and hope you will share with us your favorite Birdfoot memories and what the festival has meant to you.

It's hard to believe it has been two months since Birdfoot partnered with the Descendants Project at the Whitney Plantation. The meaningful listening pilgrimage "Born by the River" focused on healing and tracing the connections between our past and present.

We are looking forward to more community based events in our 2024 season!

Shout out to our special guest artists Tara Melvin and Giovanna Joseph who performed with our musicians at our 2023 Concert: Born by the River!

Through the music of John Luther Adams, Ben Zervigon, Lei Liang, Edmond Dédé, and Camille Nickerson we explored how our collective memories and narratives sculpt our relationship to the places we live and to each other.

Here’s to Birdfoot’s amazing Kitchen Krewe, who cooked and fed Birdfoot’s musicians and staff during the first four days of the festival.

We also want to thank our incredible hosts at River’s Retreat (Covington, Louisiana), where Birdfoot’s Artist Retreat! The Artist Retreat is an integral component of Birdfoot Festival, where the festival’s come together to rehearse all the music that is performed during festival concerts.
