🎉 Congratulations to our founder and executive director, Derrick Tabb, on being named one of eleven finalists for the 2026 Wilmers Integrity Prize.

"I built what I once needed, and have spent nearly two decades proving that staying with young people changes lives."

We couldn't agree more. 💛

Through The Roots of Music, Derrick has dedicated nearly 20 years to empowering New Orleans youth through music, mentorship, and opportunity while helping preserve the culture that makes our city so special.

We're proud to celebrate this recognition and the impact Derrick continues to make every day. 🎺✨

Happy Birthday, Dr. Ware!

Some of the most important work at The Roots of Music happens quietly.

It happens in phone calls that never make it onto social media, in conversations after a difficult day, and in moments when a young person needs someone to listen, to advocate for them, or to simply remind them that they matter.

The remarkable thing about Dr. Ware is that she is never seeking recognition for the work she does. She simply shows up, day after day, and does it because she loves these kids and believes so deeply in their future, warmth, and compassion have a way of making people feel seen. Her understanding presence has a way of making people feel safe.

The remarkable thing about Dr. Ware is that she is never seeking recognition for the work she does. She simply shows up, day after day, and does it because she loves these kids and believes so deeply in their future.

We are grateful for her every day.

Happy Birthday to a truly extraordinary member of The Roots of Music family.

Some people are simply meant to lead a band.

If you’ve spent any time around The Roots of Music over the last few years, you’ve seen Ms. Vee in action. You’ve seen her teaching our youngest students in Sprouts of Music. You’ve seen her leading our Intermediate Class, where she pushes students to turn potential into excellence. You’ve likely seen her with a trumpet in hand, and you’ve certainly seen the way students gravitate toward her.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that Veronique “Ms. Vee” Dorsey will serve as the new Band Director of The Marching Crusaders.

Outside of The Roots of Music, Ms. Vee is a member of the world-renowned Original Pinettes Brass Band. She writes ELA curriculum used in charter schools in New Orleans. Following the unexpected passing of her mother, Veronica Downs Dorsey, last year, she stepped into the role of Interim Minister of Music at St. Peter Claver Church, continuing a proud family legacy.

Around here, though, she’s simply Ms. Vee.

Some stories come full circle.

Years ago, Bear Williams was an incredibly talented, eager young musician marching with The Roots of Music Marching Crusaders. At that young age, his drive and leadership abilities were already evident. He served as section leader for The Marching Crusaders, for the O. Perry Walker High School band, for the Southern University Human Jukebox, and for the whole SWAC conference.

He later returned to The Roots of Music, this time as Band Director, guiding students along the same path he once marched himself. For countless young musicians, Mr. Bear became not just a teacher but a steady presence who served as both mentor and role model. He challenged students to strive for excellence while never forgetting where they came from.

Now, Mr. Bear begins an exciting new chapter as Head Arranger for his alma mater, the legendary Southern University Human Jukebox.

His journey from Marching Crusader to Band Director to one of the most respected positions in collegiate band culture is a testament to his talent and commitment to the art form he loves.

We are incredibly proud of all that Mr. Bear has accomplished and grateful for everything he has given to The Roots of Music over the years. His impact will be felt in the lives of the young people he helped shape for years to come.

Congratulations, Mr. Bear. Thank you for helping write such an important chapter in the story of The Roots of Music. We can't wait to watch you shine in this new role. We are so proud of you.

💛🖤 Once a Crusader, always a Crusader. 💙💛

Happy Birthday to our fearless leader, Derrick Tabb! 💙🥁

There is no The Roots of Music without Derrick’s vision, without his heart, and without his unrelenting belief in the potential of young people in New Orleans. Derrick believed kids here deserved more. More opportunity. More guidance. More joy. More music in their lives. So he built this program from the ground up.

For nearly two decades, he has poured himself into this mission and into the talented kids who walk through our doors every day. Thousands of young musicians have grown up under his guidance because he never stops showing up for them.
Anybody who has spent even five minutes around Derrick knows exactly who he is. He leads with love. He makes people feel seen. He carries New Orleans culture with pride everywhere he goes.

And on top of all that, he is one of the baddest drummers to ever pick up a pair of sticks.

We love you, Derrick. Thank you for everything you give the kids, to your staff, to New Orleans, and to all of us lucky enough to know you.

Last week, we officially dedicated Miss Anne’s Kitchen!

Thanks to the generosity of Anne Gauthier and the Gauthier Family Foundation, our students now have a fully renovated and operational kitchen space.

The renovation includes a new dishwasher, reusable dishes and utensils, and upgrades that will help make meal service more efficient while creating a more welcoming environment for our students and staff.

Students, families, staff, and supporters gathered for the dedication celebration, where The Marching Crusaders serenaded Miss Anne and students enjoyed snowballs from Sneauxla Girlz On Da Go.

Happy Belated Birthday to Mr. Rawlins! 🎺
Mr. Rawlins is one of those people whose impact on this city really can’t be measured.
For 15 years, he has helped shape The Roots of Music into what it is today. His standard, his presence, his knowledge of band culture, and the way he pushes young musicians to be better has left a mark on generations of kids both inside our program and across New Orleans.

Around Roots, his influence is everywhere. In the sound of the band. In the discipline. In the pride our students carry when they step out for any performance.
He is truly invaluable to this organization, and we are deeply grateful for everything he continues to pour into our young musicians and our programs.
