ever heard of food-not-bombs? how 'bout fucno (food under claiborne new orleans)?. familiar with seeds of peace or everybody's kitchen? we are inspired by all these projects. community kitchen aims to do many things. our mission is to bring together those who love to grow, gather, cook, and serve food so

that we may build solidarity with those marginalized by capitalism and the industrial food system. at it’s simplest, we will distribute fresh food to neighborhoods and serve homemade meals in places that suffer from food insecurity; at it’s most complex, we hope to bring chefs, radical organizers, & neighbors to the table to eat and talk about the issues that effect our communities, especially around hunger and food access. we get food donations from around the city, cook in our kitchens, and serve in a variety of ways. at this time, we provide free, hot meals to the houseless in the central city & downtown areas, distribute free produce to neighbors & community organizations, and organize solidarity food catering for anti-capitalist & social justice organizations. we’d like to do outreach across the city, so contact us if you know other places we can distribute fresh food and serve meals. we can also assist others in starting similar projects in their neighborhoods. WHEN DO YOU COOK & SERVE TO THE PUBLIC? right now we’re cooking on tuesdays and hoping to get more kitchens involved on other days. the work shifts are something like this:
10am – 3pm: prep & cook
3pm – 5:30pm: serve & clean

HOW DO I GET IN TOUCH? e-mail: kitchen (at) commiekitsch.org

WIN!
Having ruled that Food Not Bombs does have a First Amendment right to share food, the 11th Circuit sent the case back down to the lower court to determine if the city’s ordinance violates those rights. The City of Fort Lauderdale did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“The court’s opinion recognized sharing food with another human being is one of the oldest forms of human expression,” said Kirsten Anderson, litigation director at the Southern Legal Counsel and lead attorney on the case. “We think this decision strengthens our message to cities across the country that they need to invest in constructive solutions to homelessness instead of wasting government resources on punishing people who seek to offer aid.”

Fort Lauderdale police have even arrested a 90-year-old man and two ministers who were simply trying to share food with the homeless.

Hollygrove Market & Farm has supported Community Kitchen for all of our 5 years of existence with weekly donations of unsellable produce. They're hanging on by a string economically, but are looking to grow into the future. Please consider supporting this 7-day-a-week farmers market with a donation.
"Despite being open for 9 years, Hollygrove Market survives week to week. We are funded almost entirely by market sales. Our profit margins are thin and we pay a fair wage to our employees and fair market value to our farmers. The disruption caused by Hurricane Nate affected us greatly. The weekends bring in 75% of our income. Closing part of the weekend, loss of perishable products, and other expenses incurred will bring total weekend losses to over $5,000.
A building renovation project [will] allow the Market to generate another stream of revenue by hosting community meetings, outdoor special events, educational workshops, and possibly renting office space to local nonprofits and businesses."

Hollygrove Market & Farm survives week to week; Nate reduced our revenue and jeopardized our sustainability. Forced closing/product loss will cost us over $5,000. We have a plan but we need your help!
