On April 28, JSRI partnered with St. Catherine of Siena in Metairie for a teach-in on mass incarceration. Over 100 parishioners attended and heard from 12 speakers, including advocates, system-impacted individuals, and community leaders.

The evening was a powerful reminder of the urgent need for reform and the role faith communities can play in that work.

The United States has had a long and terrible history with pursuing justice in its carceral system. The long lasting legacy of non-unanimous juries is chief among them.

On this episode of the JustSouth Monthly podcast, host Si Starks interviews Loyola Law professor William Snowden where they discuss the history and legacy of non-unanimous jury verdicts as well as the continuing fight for those still affected by them.

Students from Loyola-Rayburn presented research and creative work alongside students from Loyola New Orleans. The event highlighted how education and dialogue can build empathy, connection, and shared understanding across barriers like incarceration.

This past Christmas, in collaboration with Loyola students at Rayburn Correctional Center, JSRI collected 480 toys and over $1,500 in donations. These were sent to Rayburn for children who were visiting their parents for Christmas. The Loyola-Rayburn SGA reflected, “It is very difficult for those of us who are parents and it can only be that much harder for the children themselves. Therefore, the gifts that you have provided for them are indeed gifts to us all.”

Please join us on Saturday, April 18th at 12:00 P.M. for the closing reception of 'The Trail They Blazed' exhibit! On display in the Monroe Library since January 22nd, this exhibit presents first-hand accounts of the tremendous efforts during the civil rights movement to transform Louisiana from a Jim Crow stronghold into a more equitable place. Through archival photographs and oral history excerpts, 'The Trail They Blazed' immerses viewers in the daily realities and extraordinary courage of the era.

Our reception begins at 12:00 P.M. and food will be provided.

Monroe Library’s Special Collections & Archives complementary exhibit, 'Leading Toward Justice: Loyola, New Orleans, and the Struggle for Civil Rights,' will exhibit until the end of 2026.

JSRI, the Theater Department [Theatre for the Culture specifically sponsored, should we mention that or just the theatre department], and The NOLA Project welcomed 200 Catholic high school students from Ursuline, St. Augustine, Rummel, and Holy Cross to campus on Thursday for a staged reading of the play A Lesson Before Dying—which explores wrongful conviction, prison education, and the death penalty in 1940s Louisiana.

Following the performance, students heard from JSRI staff about their personal experiences and work to end the death penalty, including two research coordinators who had once been facing life in prison. The day concluded with an admissions panel and lunch in the Orleans Room. The students were engaged and excited to learn, asked thoughtful questions, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

One Ursuline teacher shared shortly after returning:
"Our group just returned from campus and had nothing but amazing things to say about the program—‘Exceptional!’ ‘Best field trip ever!’ Thank you so much to you and your team for the opportunity!”
