The Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day Committee was organized in the Irish Channel in 1947. The current president of the organization is Richard (Dick) Burke, Jr. (son and nephew of two of the organizers; Dick and Paul Burke). Enduring years of change in the “Channel,” the organization has survived and this year, plans to parade with the largest membership ever (fourteen hundred plus). The organizat

ion credits its survival to their deep, strong roots. While the top root is Irish Heritage, many of it’s members feel an even stronger bond, just being from or associated with, the Irish Channel. Most people are aware of the pre-parade mass, followed by the parade up Magazine Street with hundreds of men in formal attire. This year the parade will be held on March 11, 2017, the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day. In recent years, the organization’s activities have greatly expanded to include supporting such fund-raisers as Special Olympics; the Chrones Benefit Golf Tournament for Chrones Research; The Chefs’ Charity of St. Michael’s Special School; distribution of Thanksgiving food baskets and active support of The Friends of St. Alphonsus; a dedicated group that has transformed the former church into a vital cultural center while in the progress of restoring the art, stained glass windows and physical premises to its original magnificence. Since 1978 the members have worn with great pride, commemorative medallions honoring Father Seelos, St. Alphonsus Church, St. Patrick’s Church and St. Michael’s Special School, and the Irish Harp.

A Message to Our Parade Participants and Members:

The Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day Parade has a long and proud tradition as one of the most family-friendly and neighborhood-centered celebrations in New Orleans. Generations of families gather along the route each year to celebrate Irish heritage, community spirit, and the joy of St. Patrick’s Day.

Every member, marcher, rider, and float lieutenant shares the responsibility of protecting that tradition.

To ensure that our parade remains welcoming for everyone, the Irish Channel Parade maintains a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate throws or behavior. Any participant found distributing or throwing inappropriate items, or engaging in behavior that undermines the spirit of the parade, will be immediately removed from the parade and may not be permitted to return in the future.

Items that are not permitted include, but are not limited to:

• Materials that are racist or discriminatory toward any group
• Sexually explicit or suggestive items
• Offensive or vulgar objects or language
• Any item intended to embarrass, antagonize, or harm another person

If you’re unsure whether something is appropriate, ask yourself one simple question:

Would you feel comfortable if your mother, your child’s teacher, or your neighbor saw you on the evening news explaining why you threw it?

If the answer is no, then it does not belong in our parade.

This celebration is about family, tradition, and community. Children line the streets alongside parents, grandparents, and friends. The smiles, laughter, and traditions we share are what make the Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day Parade so special.

Let’s work together to keep that spirit strong and make this year’s parade one that our entire community can be proud of.

💚 Sláinte and see you on the route.

Thank you to everyone who showed the Irish Channel some love. Our neighborhood parade and celebration is one of the best traditions in New Orleans, and it wouldn’t be the same without the incredible community that supports it every year.

Now the countdown is on… see you all in the Channel soon! 🍀

Almost one week until St. Patrick’s Day! ☘️

The Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day Parade marches this Saturday beginning around 1 PM. Come out early, wear your green, and join the celebration through the neighborhood.

While you’re out, stop by Parasol’s Restaurant & Bar for a green beer — all green beer purchases (for the whole month) benefit St. Michael Special School.

We can’t wait to see everyone out there! 🍀
