Q&A UPDATE: Yall have been asking great questions today. Moving our replies to main so those who aren’t in the stories can see them!

Short version (all responses apply to Louisiana unless otherwise stated):
- We have emergency radios for folks who need them. DM us to come pick up from the farm. You won’t need them for this storm.
- You don’t need to fill your gas tank or get water.
- Dry air continues to push the system east.
- You can do your regular activities this weekend.
- We have close to zero rain concerns.
- We do expect good sh*****ng at the lakefront.
- For our Mississippi folks, stay tuned, you’ll know so much more tomorrow.
- We do expect this storm to keep growing in strength but then get reduced before landfall.

The Q&A will stay open until the storm is gone, look for a new question box every 24 hours.

STORM Q&A: ISAIAS

Most of yall know how it works by now. For a decade we’ve given you accurate information about every named storm in the Gulf, day to day and moment to moment.

There’s a first time for everything, but we haven’t gotten it wrong yet.

We were with you, telling you to evacuate for Hurricane Ida if you can (and actively helping folks evacuate), telling you Hurricane Rafael (who?) would miss us completely and not to worry, and sharing power after Hurricane Zeta. You can see most of our Q&As forever pinned at the top of our IG profile.

Thank you for sharing your questions, knowledge, and worries with us throughout the years! We know Hurricane Season is a lot, start to finish.

That said: We are NOT worried about Isaias in and around New Orleans. That’s why we haven’t been telling you to prepare.

And still, you might have questions! Or feelings to share! We’re here for that — drop them in the question box in our stories, or DM them to us.

Right now we are recommending that local folks stay calm, help others stay calm, enjoy the beautiful weather we are having today, and don’t cancel your weekend plans unless they include being on a boat in the Gulf... (which, ahem, if you DO have a boat, we’re always open to invites, just sayin’).

Our discernment is rooted in being Native to here, on our homelands. It’s rooted in talks with our Maw Maws and Paw Paws. It’s rooted in studying heaps of information from meteorologists, government entities, and charts and graphs — while also watching the land, birds, clouds in real time. It’s rooted in Emergency Management training and many years of experience.

We’re bringing 200 resource guides to the Warrant Clinic this weekend and will be there to help out! Info in the resource guides can connect you to food, housing, healthcare, employment, and legal support beyond the clinic. We call every resource listed (100 pages!), every year, to make sure it’s real stuff that actually helps. No expired links, no programs that don’t exist anymore.

Registration is full, but you can still join the waitlist at bit.ly/warrant-clinic and follow New Orleans Workers Center for Racial Justice for future clinics.

What: 3rd Annual Warrant Clinic

Time: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Cost: Free of charge!

Settle your fines and fees. Clear your warrants. Get your license back. One day, one building, one visit.

The judges and city attorneys block their Saturday for you, and court clerks work hard to prepare your case before you walk through the door.

Last year, they resolved 531 cases and cleared over $450,000 in fines and fees in a single day.

We were all scientists, experimenting with bamboo this past week for our “Creating, Dreaming, and Working with Bamboo” workshop!

What’s abundant around us? How did it get here? How can we build relationship with it?

We figured out a non-exhaustive list of ways to use bamboo at our Indigenous Youth Farmers Program this past Friday: Food!, a pot/cooking, water filtration, raft, cordage/ropes, garden bed borders, drums and rattles, rain sticks, natural fireworks (you see this at the bonfires in St. James).

The more we see and appreciate the natural world around us, the more we want to protect it, don’t we?

Hey this is today, Friday 9/4! And it’ll be again this Sunday 9/6! Both days 3-6pm. This is a VERY chill distribution situation. No crowds, just vibes and trees.

We’ll be puttering around the farm — you pull up, street park, walk onto the farm and say “hi”. We hook you up with whatever supplies you’re interested in from the list.

Stick around and help pull some weeds or chop some tree branches if you’d like, we won’t stop you 😜 This is also a great time to pay the chickens a visit, learn about mutual aid, and generally see what we’re up to 🐥

Today was our first Indigenous Youth Farmers workshop! We learned how to make natural dyes, and we harvested plant relatives from around the farm to test different pigments. We learned that banana flower actually creates a light purple, which then color changes into a beautiful blue! Blue is one of the more rare pigments to find in nature, so this is very exciting.

We painted some dried okra with clay pigments, and we learned how to make cordage (rope) from banana stems.

Throughout the program, we’re hoping to keep learning about the abundance all around us at the farm and beyond. This is where hope lives.

Thank you to Dr. Tammy Greer for teaching us so much today about how nature provides and how important it is to keep growing our plants so that we can grow our culture, our colors, our medicine, and our futures.

* The last pic is a special “welcome bag” we put together for the youth participants today to help prepare them for their farm work days and for the rest of hurricane season. 💚🪶🌱🎨
