Lane Positioning is INTEGRAL to safe biking and varies tremendously depending on the direction of travel, street width, quantity of lanes and the existence of bicycle infrastructure and road obstructions.

Check out the slides to understand why someone may be riding a bike in a place other than the right lane or right side of the lane and feel free to comment with any questions!

Thank you to all who answered our call to come out to City Hall for the Transportation Committee Meeting yesterday and spoke for safer bicycling in our city!

The Committee had four items on the agenda including a resolution to expand the Opportunity Pass for RTA (which we wholeheartedly support!) and a presentation on E-Bike Safety from the Department of Public Works, the Health Department and NOPD, that comes out of Safe Streets and Roads For All (SS4A) research, aimed to reduce traffic fatalities.

We urge you all to watch the recorded presentation which is in our link tree, but we are including the slides here for you to get an idea of the data!

Bike Easy agrees strongly with the city in their approach to reducing the large number of e-bike fatalities of city has experienced. We both agree there needs to be clearer definitions and moderization of state and local laws, as well as expanded public education about what is and isn't an e-bike and the rules of the road.

We are happy to share that Bike Easy is offering a Smart E-Biking class both in-person or on-zoom on September 26th, free to the public. We will cover all these topic and more. For more information on this offering, check out the link in our link-tree or visit bikeeasy.org/events.

Thank you Entergy for sponsoring our Free Bike Light Giveaways!
Last week, we set up outside of the Crescent City Farmers Market and equipped 33 people with rechargeable lights on their bicycles. A bright front white light and red for the rear: lights up the street, gets everyone street legal, and of course makes biking even easier!
Follow our social media to catch us next month!

This Thursday, August 27, the City Council’s Transportation Committee will take up an issue that is becoming increasingly important on our streets: e-bike safety.

The meeting is scheduled for 10:00 AM at City Council Chambers (1300 Perdido Street), and the current, not-yet-finalized agenda includes a presentation from the New Orleans Health Department on e-bike safety, along with updates from RIDE, and the Ground Transportation Bureau.

We want you to be part of the conversation.

E-bike use and accessibility continue to grow in New Orleans, which means more people are getting around our city by e-bike. That’s a good thing. E-bikes can make it easier for people to get to work, school, appointments, and community events, and they can open up bicycling to people who might otherwise have difficulty riding a traditional bicycle.

At the same time, we’re seeing growing concern about serious injuries and fatal crashes involving e-bikes and other electric-powered devices.
