Question!!!Will it be your child’s school next? finding out through the news that their school is closing?
School closures should be the last option, not the first.
Instead of rushing to close schools, districts should require a 3–5 year improvement and investment plan that focuses on strengthening schools before shutting them down.
Parents, students, teachers, and the community deserve real public hearings and voting opportunities because they understand the school’s needs and challenges firsthand.
Teachers and staff should not lose retirement security or face sudden unemployment after dedicating their lives to educating our children.
The community already knows the answers to these questions:Who is most affected? What neighborhoods lose access? What educational, cultural, and community assets disappear?
We know the answer is Black, Hispanic, immigrant, and lower-income students and families.
The closure of Sarah T. Reed and other schools facing similar uncertainty reflects a cycle of instability that impacts students, families, and educators alike. Breaking that cycle requires funding, transparency, community voice, and a genuine commitment to strengthening schools before deciding to close them.
Before this happens again to our children, our parents, our teachers, and our communities, join Step Up Louisiana as we organize, advocate, and fight for schools that are strengthened not abandoned!!

The historic ‘neighborhood school’ served one of the largest Hispanic populations in the city.

Louisianans deserve to have a say on every Carbon Capture project being proposed in their local areas. Having bills voted down in our legislature that would give residents the right to vote on Carbon Capture projects proposed to come to their parish puts landowners in a very vulnerable position! We have to put people over profits Louisiana!

A slate of bills to give individual Louisiana parishes say-so over whether carbon sequestration projects can take place locally failed Tuesday in committee, effectively killing the effort for the legislative session.

Great write up highlighting our Lead Parent Union Organizer Melissa Francis, and addressing concerns of the local governance of our schools in New Orleans!

The Orleans Parish School Board lacks the power it needs to effectively govern its charter-heavy system, argues guest columnists Amanda Lu and Melissa Francis. This bill would make the situation better.
