Executive Board President Reflections: Emeka Chima

With earnest conviction, I have cherished the valuable time I have spent involved with the nonprofit Students With Psychosis over the past five years—an active student leader since April 2020 and currently its Executive Board President. Through SWP, I have embarked on an empowering journey of self-discovery and self-advocacy, having a positive impact on a widespread community.

Given the opportunity to speak on behalf of my own lived experience as a schizophrenia survivor, I have keynoted and participated in panels that have reached large audiences. I have also spearheaded various events, both in-person and virtual, including local and community-based outreach initiatives. Since then, the horizon has expanded much more significantly than I could have ever imagined.

Each step of the way has been a learning experience where I could immerse myself day by day in something I am passionate about through engaging discussion and normalizing the conversation around seeking support and battling stigma/stereotypes around mental illness.

Along this evolving path, I have noticed a shift in my perception of the world around me: there is a growing need for education not only individually but also systematically. SWP has cultivated a safe and inclusive space where people from all backgrounds and viewpoints can collectively make a difference in their respective networks and embedded environments.

Additionally, I have determined that we can leave a lasting impact by utilizing our voices and stories as tools to motivate change, spread awareness, and foster empathy. Without the support from SWP and its stakeholders, my outlook and the role I play at present, such as a mental health ally and champion for marginalized groups and neurodivergence, would not be the same.

One primary example of how I was introduced to a cause greater than my own was receiving the Leadership Award at the SWP'24 Conference at Yale University.

Executive Board Elect Davy Yue (he/him) is a fellow creative and mental health advocate. His lived experiences led him to connect with his peers through SWP’s online programming, where a compelling community further drove forward his advocacy with purpose transformed from pain and passion. On the SWP executive board, Davy aims to enhance the organization’s strategic outreach to students struggling with psychosis just like he once lived through.

He works as a consultant and advisor for various mental health nonprofits to build system-changing projects and impactful initiatives. Davy’s ongoing collaboration with the Schizophrenia and Psychosis Action Alliance has developed many essential resources and toolkits serving those impacted by psychosis. Davy works to leverage his lived expertise to empower others to find their own strength-based recovery path and their best resilience strategies. He has presented engaging workshops at numerous conferences with Active Minds, NAMICon, New Leaders Council, and as a keynote speaker at the 2024 Tennessee’s Healthy Transitions summit.

Davy also serves as a NextGen young adult member of the National Board of Directors for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. In 2022, Davy shared his own lived experience through countless community educational presentations in his local NAMI affiliate Palm Beach County, FL. Earning a mini grant for his advocacy, Davy’s favorite initiative has always been bringing his own recovery story into local mental health hospitals - featuring culturally-reflective personal storytelling interweaved with foot-tapping live alto saxophone songs.

Davy earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science - with focuses on computer science and management - from Vanderbilt University in 2020. Davy loves how his technical and math-oriented background drives his strategic leadership and analytical thinking within his heart-lead advocacy work.

Emeka Chima was given the wonderful chance to partake in a rewarding lunch meeting at University of Maryland School of Medicine, which comprised Maryland CSC peer specialists, some recurring and others just getting to know. It was quite a worthwhile journey to see each other as individuals not limited to their circumstances—how we encounter obstacles day-to-day—but how we adjust to make strides in the world. Emeka Chima caught a glimpse at how our individual paths profoundly overlapped and how everyone has the choice to “stand up” rather than “stand alone.”

This impactful event presented a safe and intimate space where each of us could disclose parts of our stories without fear or judgment while sharing interpersonal connections about our daily work, the struggles, and the successes. Emeka Chima felt strongly embraced by the community—those who exchanged common interests despite each of our differences—and, without limitations, brought us together with unique insights and backgrounds.

Facilitated by Drs. Nev Jones and Melanie Bennett and accompanied by a workforce of peers, the ambiance was empowering and relatable on many fronts. Many thanks to the hard-working, diligent professionals in the mental health space whose work is capable of spreading to other areas where we are most needed and with increasing high demand!

Emeka Chima encourages peers from all walks of life, whether in a personal or professional setting, to channel their inner advocate and start or continue to pursue their passions, treating self-care as significant as compassionate care! We can lean on each other and glean from each other not only in times of need but freely. In earnest, our capacity to rely on ourselves may seem limited at times, but the possibilities of being part of a greater community are limitless.

Communal support and the CSC model of recovery come in all different forms, ranging from all directions. Let us keep on striving towards what we know best, what we can learn more about, and how we can adapt our reach to those we serve—using

and had an amazingly insightful discussion on loneliness. , you and your fellow panelists rocked it!

"Girls as young as age five report feeling lonely—an indicator that the loneliness epidemic and mental health crisis among girls have spread farther and wider than we ever thought. This underscores the critical importance of fostering meaningful connections and building resilience in today's youth.

The discussion will feature a panel of experts leading the way in addressing this issue within their communities, along with a firsthand perspective from a youth voice. Panelists will shed light on the mental health challenges younger generations face and explore solutions for combating loneliness."

📢📢 Advisory Council Spring '25 - ..
Maye Jepson lives in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and along with her husband Phil, is the caregiver/TRUST PARTNER and parent of Jason Jepson who has a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder.  She will not rest until mental health is treated equally with physical health.  Remembering the uncertain days when her family first learned of her son's mental illness, Maye formed a Facebook support group-- Parenting Thru Mental Illness, hoping to give and share resources for those who are newly entering the world of mental illness.  In the past Maye has volunteered with several international boards including Stonecroft Ministries, Imago Dei Arts, and Global Partners in Hope.   In addition to a Bachelor of Science degree, Maye has a master’s degree in counseling from Marshall University.  She has taught hundreds of women to write their personal stories as a legacy to their families and friends.   Like her son, Maye volunteers with the Share Network where she shares her perspective on mental health as a parent wanting desperately to help a young adult child maneuver the challenges of schizophrenia.  Maye served as an Executive Board Member of Students With Psychosis from 2020 to 2021 and an Advisory Council Member since 2021. Maye serves on the Advisory Council of Students with Psychosis because she believes in the importance of shedding light on mental health issues from the youngest to the oldest consumer.  Maye and her son Jason were Finalists for the Social Health Network’s Best Team award, and they were the recipients of the Students with Psychosis Family Advocacy Award.

📢📢 Advisory Council Spring '25 - ..
Alejandro (Alex) Fernandez is an entrepreneur and writer with a strong commitment to mental health advocacy. He has founded and led two venture capital-backed mental health startups, leveraging innovation to improve care. His advocacy for psychosis awareness began nearly two decades ago when his brother first exhibited symptoms of schizophrenia. Alejandro has been actively involved in nonprofit work, supporting individuals living with psychosis and their families. He played a key role in the early development and global expansion of Students With Psychosis, an organization he continues to champion. Alejandro served as an Executive Board Member for Students With Psychosis from 2018 to 2021, an Advisory Council Member since 2021, and currently serves as Advisory Council Chair. He hopes to find more ways for people to understand and help those who live with any form of psychosis. He’s a firm believer that everyone struggling needs friends who are willing to go through darkness, at times, in order to find a path that works for them.

Cheering on this year's speakers at . Thank you for giving a platform to "ideas worth spreading." Grateful to be back to where it all started with where SWP was introduced as just an idea back at the 2017 TEDxPSU talk "I Am Not A Monster: Schizophrenia" in this very same auditorium. Now, with over 7.5 million long-form video views on the TedxTalk, and a dedicated team, we made that idea a reality. Thank you, !..
