“Successful ReEntry starts with access to care.”

Louisiana’s approval of Medicaid-supported healthcare services for people preparing to leave prison is an important step toward stronger reentry outcomes. Access to mental health services, substance use treatment, prescription medications, and continued medical care can help individuals transition back into their communities with greater stability.

Reentry is about more than returning home. It’s about having the resources and support needed to rebuild a life—including access to healthcare, stable housing, and opportunities to succeed.

"When we invest in people, we strengthen our communities."

Louisiana is joining 18 other states that provide federal government-supported healthcare access to incarcerated people near the end of their prison terms, with hopes it eases their reentry process.

“A shelter is more than a roof over someone’s head, it is a lifeline, a pathway to stability, and an opportunity to rebuild.”

New Orleans is considering a proposed $5 million cut that could close its low-barrier homeless shelter and leave hundreds of people at risk of losing critical support. We must ask ourselves: **How can we address homelessness by eliminating the very resources that help people move toward stability?**

Housing is more than a basic need. It is the foundation for dignity, health, and opportunity. Our communities need solutions that connect people to safe shelter, affordable housing, and the support necessary to thrive.

New Orleans homeless services cuts target the low-barrier shelter the city credits with moving 495 people into housing. Here is what the council should ask.
