There is something special about New Orleanians who love this city as much as they love good costuming, a little theatrical magic, and the art of a proper transformation. We are delighted to welcome Claus Sadlier, Trixie Minx, and Richard Read as our judges for Witches & Warlocks — three guests joining us for a celebration of creativity, character, and the wonderfully macabre spirit that makes New Orleans so unmistakably itself.

As we welcome the spooky season, there could be no more fitting setting than Storyville — a world apart, where history and imagination meet, and where friends and neighbors can gather to celebrate the season in true New Orleans fashion. An evening of extraordinary costumes, familiar faces, shared traditions, and just the right amount of enchantment awaits!

The Annual Witches & Warlocks Mini-Soirée returns Wednesday, October 14, from 6:30–8:30 PM at the New Orleans Storyville Museum. We live for seeing old places continue to have a life of their own. For more than 100 years, Matassa’s Market has been part of everyday life in the Vieux Carré. Since opening in 1924, generations of New Orleanians have stopped in at the corner of Dauphine and St. Philip—a neighborhood fixture that has remained.
And now, the kitchen is open! Visit a friendly nostalgic spot for a hot meal and appreciate that is what preservation is about. Not freezing the Quarter in time, but making sure the places that give it character continue to live, serve, and evolve for generations to come. The Vieux Carré Commission Foundation is thrilled to see this beloved piece of Quarter history continue its story.

Vieux Carré elegance in iron. In the Vieux Carré, architecture often reveals itself in the details. This elaborate cast-iron entrance gate, framed by substantial granite piers, is a striking example of the neighborhood’s distinctive architectural language. Notice how the gate echoes the cast-iron fence above the stucco chain wall, while the granite cap provides a quiet visual foundation. Even an entrance can become a work of art.

Hear directly from Bryan Block, Director of the Historic Districts Landmarks Commission (HDLC), and Renee Bourgogne, Deputy Director of the Vieux Carré Commission (VCC), as they discuss current priorities, preservation policies, permitting, and answer questions from attendees.
