This week, staff and supporters from Vanishing Paradise, the National Wildlife Federation, the Everglades Foundation, Captains for Clean Water and dozens of other supporters and advocates for America’s Everglades met with legislators and staff on Capital Hill to drive home the message that Everglades restoration is working and needs their continued support.

The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan is delivering projects that will help to store and clean water before sending it south to protect habitats, fuel Florida’s tourism economy and provide clean drinking water for millions of people. Thanks to all who joined in the effort to continue driving restoration forward in the Everglades. Together we can ensure that the Everglades are thriving for generations to come.

How do we make sure Louisiana’s culture, economy, wildlife habitat and working coast are protected? Projects like these! 🪏

The Highway 1 Terracing and Living Shoreline project in south Lafourche Parish works to protect communities and a vital energy and evacuation corridor. Healthy coastal marshes like these act as feeding, nesting and wintering habitat for waterfowl, as well as a nursery for juvenile fish, shrimp and crabs. Today is Endangered Species Day, and the return of Kemp’s ridley sea turtles to Louisiana’s Chandeleur Islands is a powerful reminder that protecting wildlife starts with protecting habitat.🐢

Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, the world’s most seriously endangered sea turtle species, have been documented nesting on Louisiana’s Chandeleur Islands after generations of absence.

Restoring these disappearing barrier islands is critical to protecting the habitat endangered species depend on and helping ensure Louisiana’s coast remains a place where wildlife can thrive.

Louisiana turns 214 today. As it says on our license plates, Sportsman’s Paradise depends on healthy marshes for wildlife and fisheries habitats. Coastal restoration is critical to protect these areas, sustain those fishing and hunting traditions, and ensure future generations can experience the same Louisiana we know and love today.

We heard Osceola Fever was going around…. 🦃🤒

It’s turkey season, and as the temperatures warm and days get longer, some turkey hunters get the “itch” to find themselves an elusive Osceola turkey. Not only are they a prize for hunters, but these unique birds and their home terrain highlight the need to conserve and restore connected habitat in Southern Florida and America’s Everglades. Thank you to Trey Sutton and Marc Wyatt for their photos! Read more about a recent successful hunt: https://www.vanishingparadise.org/osceola-fever-its-a-thing/

Today marks 16 years since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

In 2010, the disaster claimed 11 lives and impacted countless wildlife species, including those important to us, sportsmen who hunt and fish along the Gulf coast. In our recent blog, we discuss how the oil impacted these areas and species and highlight restoration projects that aim to better protect what the spill damaged: https://www.vanishingparadise.org/16-years-after-the-bp-disaster-successes-on-louisianas-coast-and-beyond/

It’s the 50th anniversary of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA). This federal law aims to sustain healthy marine fisheries across the U.S. by preventing overfishing, rebuilding fish stocks and protecting habitat.

One key objective is “Return ‘Em Right,” which better equips and trains anglers to release fish back into deep water, increasing their survival rate after suffering from barotrauma. Read more about MSA and Return ‘Em Right:

The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) is the primary law governing American ocean fisheries.
