Residents hit by Hurricane Isaias in FL, AL & MS need immigrant resilience workers to repair. They're the lifeblood of every recovery. But ICE threats to them are jeopardizing the rebuilding -- which could cost $3 billion -- and hurting the residents who need help most.

Resilience Force director Saket Soni told The New York Times, “Since Hurricane Katrina, it’s always been vulnerable immigrants who have responded to hurricanes."

Santos Alvarados, a longtime RF member and veteran resilience worker, told the NYT: “For sure, we need to make a living. But the brutality of what ICE is doing to people scares us.”

Concerns about the state’s immigration dragnet may keep the itinerant labor force at home, threatening Hurricane Isaias recovery efforts.

⚠️ The Resilience Force team has been scouting across the Gulf Coast this week in the wake of Hurricane Isaias, which brought destructive winds, flooding, and tornadoes across the Southeast. At least 9 deaths have been reported, with initial damage estimates reaching $2 billion.

Resilience workers are already on the ground, helping communities recover from the first hurricane to hit the Gulf this season.

Resilience Force came to Asheville, North Carolina, to help residents rebuild after Helene. Over nearly two years, the work has brought together people whose paths might never have crossed, working toward a shared goal and forming relationships that extend far beyond the work itself.

It’s something we’ve seen again and again in disaster zones: even in places of profound loss, new bonds can form. Hope can be born. 🤍
