Since becoming the Director of the Life Transformation Community Center, I have had the privilege of seeing something over and over again: God cares deeply for the people of the Hollygrove-Dixon neighborhood.
He cares for the seniors who faithfully come to programs and serve in their community.
He cares for the young people growing up here.
He cares for the Spanish-speaking families who now call this neighborhood home.
He cares for the young men who are searching for employment.
He cares for the single moms doing everything they can to raise their children well.
He cares for families who are struggling each month just to keep the lights on and the bills paid.
He cares for the resident who needs someone to pick up their commodity food box and help them fill out a job application.
He cares for the student who is struggling just to stay in school…
and He also cares for the student who is class president and the ones excelling in sports and academics.
I’ve seen that God cares for the sixth grader who walked into his father’s room and found his father deceased in bed.
He cares for the seniors who are aging in place and trying to hold on to their independence.
And He cared for the young mother who lived next door to the LTCC, who was tragically found on her bathroom floor while her infant twin daughters were still in the home.
I could tell story after story of lives being touched through the ministry of LTCC. But through all of these moments—both joyful and heartbreaking—I have learned something very important:
When we make ourselves available, God shows us opportunities to care.
And the beautiful thing is that we are not doing this work alone. The church, the community, local government, and volunteers from across the City of New Orleans are coming together to serve, to support one another, and to help build a stronger Hollygrove-Dixon neighborhood.
Volunteers from Celebration Church have been part of many of these stories—praying, serving, listening, encouraging, and loving people in practical ways.
People in Hollygrove-Dixon are experiencing something powerful: They are seeing that God cares.
