“Stitching Legacies” (2023)

Today has us thinking back in gratitude on an mural created by , , and the students of our 2023 arts intensive through a special partnership with and .

Spanning 135 feet across the historic Liberty Hardware Building, the mural honors the treme community, traditions of Black Masking Indian culture, and the culture bearers who steward these practices and keep them alive.

This mural celebrates New Orleans culture and the lasting influence of legendary Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief Allison “Tootie” Montana and his amazing wife Joyce Francis Montana.

Carnival season officially begins today. Happy Big Chief Allison Tootie Montana Day to all who celebrate ✊🏾

Every summer, a new generation of Eternal Seeds artists steps forward. A delegation of storytellers, culture-shapers, and vision-builders who use art to speak their truth and envision new possibilities. This August, they will take the stage to reflect, remember, and reimagine what’s next.

This year marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina, and our youth artists are honoring that legacy with original works that reflect on the past and dream into the future.

From an original mural unveiling to media project screenings and powerful tributes, come witness what’s possible when young people are given the tools to lead.

So excited to share our latest collaboration with the iconic

“9 Women” is the title of this newest mural, designed by Morrah Burton-Edwards () and painted with assistance from Cierra Wyche () & Sarah Roberts ()

The mural is located on the new Muses den and features 9 historic New Orleans women of color whose positive impact is still felt today.

The women depicted are:

Leah Chase
Mahalia Jackson
Dorothy Mae Taylor
Henriette DeLille
Sylvanie Williams
Oretha Castle Haley
Doris Jean Castle
and a symbolic Congo Square dancer

As part of ’s collective retreat, we got to hear from different creative professionals on lessons learned throughout their journey and how they’ve navigated challenges in their careers. These conversations covered a range of topics, from sustaining a creative practice and balancing passion with financial stability to overcoming self-doubt and finding community support.

BElite members got to ask candid questions, gain inspiration, and leave with a deeper understanding of what it takes to build a lasting and fulfilling career in the arts.

To celebrate Kuumba, the 6th principle of Kwanzaa representing creativity, Eternal Seeds is excited to invite you to our 3rd Annual Arts & Crafts Toy Giveaway in partnership with Toys for Tots.

The giveaway will take place at 1pm-6pm in conjunction with our daily candle lighting taking place from 3pm-5pm.
