A year and a half ago, Baba Jerome told us how the Freedom Riders traveled through the South, and in this image they were passing the Mississippi fields to get to their Safe House for the evening, owned by a White Woman- standing in the fields lowering and raising her hand to notify them that she was their Safe House for the night.
Mr. Jerome’s photo that was lost in Hurricane Katrina is an image of him and Doris Castle sitting side by side on the 1961 Freedom Ride which led to the desegregation of the transportation system on a Federal level.
You can see in the image the Freedom Ride Bus, the tall grassy fields, and the Safe House- Help us finish funding the image and follow our story as we add the people, Baba Jerome, Doris Castle, and the White Woman.
Re-creating this image from Mr. Jerome’s memory will help us tell the story of Safe Houses in the South during our tours. P.s.,
Your Donation will help us buy material and supplies needed, cover the cost of the Artist, and support our efforts in ensuring young people are at the center of the Freedom House Museum as we bring in youth from to put the paint on the brick wall.
Slide 2— is an image of a tour we gave to young people from a youth cooking class in April 2023 that happened at the Freedom House, we are in the Serenity Area, pictured in front of the Safe House. Our Executive Director just finished talking to young people about the role of Safe Houses as a Network of Refuge in the South during the Civil Rights Movement.
Re-creating this image from Mr. Jerome’s memory will help us tell the story of Safe Houses in the South during our tours. P.s.,
