Spelman College has named Dr. Ayanna Howard, a pioneering artificial intelligence researcher, roboticist, and former NASA engineer, as its next president. Howard will become the college’s 12th president, succeeding Dr. Helene Gayle, and is set to assume the role later this year. Widely recognized for her work in artificial intelligence, robotics, and STEM education, Howard previously served as dean of the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University and spent more than a decade at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she contributed to advanced robotics projects and space exploration initiatives.

College leaders said Howard’s appointment marks a significant moment for Spelman as the institution continues to strengthen its leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics ( ). Her selection follows a national search process and comes as Spelman looks to build on its legacy while preparing students to lead in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Rev up your engines for STEM Saturday: Force & Motion – Cars with STEM Gulf Coast! 🚗💨

K-12 students will explore the principles of force and motion through exciting, hands-on STEM activities at the Donal Snyder Recreation Center on June 20, 2026. Students will learn how force creates motion, apply these concepts to real-world experiments, and build their own grade-appropriate race cars to test and race at the end of the day! 🏁🔬

Big thanks to our event sponsors for helping us bring STEM to the community.

We’re also looking for volunteers to help inspire the next generation of innovators. College undergraduate volunteers will receive a $50 gift card! stemnola.galaxydigital.com

At STEM Global Action, we believe corporate and community partnerships can create real impact — building both future workforce opportunities and stronger communities.

With millions of children across the country lacking access to affordable summer learning opportunities, partnerships matter more than ever. Thanks to the support of partners like Entergy, Delta Utilities, and Chevron, we’re able to provide hands-on summer STEM experiences for 300+ students in New Orleans. 🚀

To every company, partner, and supporter who has helped us reach more than 250,000 students and 35,000+ families over the last 12 years — thank you for believing in this mission. Together, we can continue creating opportunities for the next generation.

On Saturday, May 16th, 150+ students, parents, and volunteers gathered at the Salvation Army Kroc center for an exciting day of hands-on STEM learning focused on buoyancy and density 🚤🌊

Participants designed, built, and raced airboats, pontoon boats, and sailboats while exploring how shape, materials, and design affect the way objects float and move through water. Through testing and friendly competition, students experienced physics in a fun and engaging way.

A special thank you to DoW STEM for sponsoring this event and helping us continue bringing hands-on STEM education to the community.
