We have just 4 days left in the campaign to raise funds for blood cancer patients. Every dollar counts and every dollar is needed to fund the next treatment!

Children, like Nora and EB, who have lost part of their childhood because of this devastating disease, are the reason we continue to fight.
I hope you will join us in this fight.

Today we are trying to get a donation from each level listed below. Can you help us by making a $50 donation?! https://pages.lls.org/mwoy/msla/nola22/wgundlach.

In the time it took you to read this post, someone was diagnosed with a blood cancer. Your donation will help that patient pay for parking, hospital visits, treatments, etc.

This is Nora Burns…She is six years old & lives in New Orleans. Nora has a loving mother and father, a brother, a puppy, she’s a ham, and she is loaded with personality. Nora Burns is no pushover!!

When she was four, she was diagnosed with Leukemia. If you count back 2 years, you know that puts us right in the crosshairs of the pandemic. There is no good timing for this diagnosis but, certainly to receive it during the pandemic is extraordinarily difficult.

Nora was cared for at Children's Hospital New Orleans, where she underwent treatment. Throughout the time of the pandemic, it was especially challenging because only one parent was allowed to be with Nora at a time.

If you look closely at these pictures though, you can imagine that Nora’s a tough nut to crack. She has endured the treatments (the treatments can be particularly tough on young kids) and is thriving today. We are glad to say that with the help of LLS, Nora is in remission. She requires ongoing monthly treatments because there is no real cure, but the treatments have been effective.

Nora, like so many others who are struggling with blood cancers, is the reason we are asking for your help. More success stories like Nora’s get us closer and closer to finding the cure.

Honor Nora, and join us in the battle by contributing to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year campaign has less than one month to the finish line (June 10th). Team Gundlach has received a fabulous donation from a generous donor (anonymous) who has gifted $10,000 to the LLS cause, via Team Gundlach.

The Donor further commits that he will match, dollar for dollar, up to the next $5,000 that Team Gundlach raises between now and 6/10.

Please help us in reaching our goal, and donate to a cause that has affected so many of us in such a big way.

Dr. Nathan Ungerleider – The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been shown to be linked to the development of Burkitt lymphoma, an aggressive B-cell lymphoma. EBV-infected cells are particularly efficient, capable of altering normal cells and promoting the growth of malignant cells while evading clearance by the immune system. Dr. Ungerleider’s LRF Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant project will investigate which cell pathways the virus targets in order to promote lymphoma progression. “Understanding the human pathways targeted by the virus will teach us a) specifically how the virus promotes Burkitt Lymphoma progression, and more generally, b) lead us to critical pathways that, when dysregulated, can promote the out-of-control cell division that characterizes tumors,” he says.

Dr. Ungerleider received his MS in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst before receiving his PhD in pathology from Tulane University School of Medicine, where he is currently a postdoctoral fellow. Inspired to start studying how tumors form by his father, a survivor of colon cancer, his interest in lymphoma research was prompted by the wide-ranging impact discoveries in lymphoma have on cancer research and science in general. Lymphoma research has contributed so much to our understanding of tumors, how they form, and how they progress,” he notes. “Many advances made studying lymphomas have underpinned research progress in a broad range of tumor types, even improving our understanding of basic cellular biology.”

Dr. Ungerleider adds that his LLS Career Development Program grant funding will assist with both this specific research project and his progression towards an independent research career. "The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society grant will contribute to my research progress by allowing me to study a topic that is of great interest and value to me. This will serve as an important opportunity for me to demonstrate that I am capable of being the principal investigator on a research fellowship and fulfilling my obligation to the LLS.”

This is my father-in-law, Rudy. He recently completed a series of treatments with monoclonal antibodies, which was a success. It is not, however, a cure.

He underwent the same treatment several years ago and was in remission, but like other cancers, it returns. Rudy is one of the many reasons we will continue to fight for advancements in treatment for leukemia and lymphoma, and eventually find a cure.
