Current U.S. administration plans to dismantle the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), a $368 million deep-sea observation network that has helped scientists monitor our oceans for more than a decade.

With more than 900 instruments deployed across the ocean, the OOI provides critical data on ocean health, climate change, ocean circulation, marine ecosystems, and biodiversity. Researchers rely on this information to better understand how our planet is changing and to inform conservation and management decisions.

The loss of this long-term monitoring system could leave major gaps in our ability to track and respond to changes happening beneath the surface.
