The funds raised at this event support Glassroots programming including our community glass recycling program that provides free access to glass recycling at 28 locations across New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Help us build islands from recycled glass sand !
We’ll be donning waders and heading into the marsh, so be prepared to play in the muck.

Coir logs are made from shredded coconut husks and will last up to 24 month before starting to deteriorate, making them an excellent 100% biodegradable material that holds the islands together until the roots systems of our native vegetation takes over.

Tasks will include moving the coir logs from our staging area on land to our the boardwalk, securing the coir to stakes in the water, and placing burlap sacks filled with recycled glass sand within the island permieter. There may be opportunities for invasive plant species removal in and out of the water too!

Glassroots is excited to be part of Come Discover the G.I.F.T. (Green Infrastructure for Tremé), where we’ll be sharing about the three R’s: reduce, reuse, and RECYCLE! ♻️
We’ll also talk about the life cycle of recyclables.

Big thanks to the Greater Tremé Consortium for putting this event together. Come learn about stormwater management and climate resilience, enjoy light refreshments and giveaways, and connect with neighbors and environmental leaders!

Highlighting this dreamy glass recycling drop off location. Crown Community Gardens, located at 19 Marywood Ct. New Orleans, LA 70128, provides incredible resources as a public green space and community garden, and community programming, and you can recycle your glass there! There is a stunning array of flowers and herbs and so much knowledge to be shared. Thank you Crown Community Garden for being an awesome glass recycling partner and being an incredible space for the community.

Do you know where your recycled glass goes? 🌀

When you drop off glass at one of our free New Orleans locations, it gets ground into sand by our partners at Glass Half Full — and that sand gets put to work. We use it to fill eco-friendly burlap sandbags that are distributed to residents across the greater New Orleans area ahead of storm season.

It’s a full circle: your recycling becomes flood protection for your neighbors.

To date, we’ve distributed 545 sandbags and counting. Your Give NOLA Day donation helps us reach even more residents who need them.
