Vote *YES tomorrow New Orleans!!

*Yes, BUT (a big BUT) This is an inadequate measure. New Orleans’ kids need more. We plan to vote yes on this measure, but know it’s not perfect.

Yes for NOLA Kids is a ballot initiative that plans to ensure that 1000 children living at or below the poverty line receive free education in some of our city’s daycare centers. However, there are 7000 kids on the waiting list who qualify for this program. Also, this program - which currently serves 200 children - is operated by a nonpublic, nonprofit organization called Agenda for Children that has a board of people who do not share the experiences of the children who would qualify or have expertise in early childhood education. And this organization operates this program for New Orleans’ public, 100% charter school district.

The Fund the People Collaborative values quality, accessible schools and education. We believe that the City of New Orleans should prioritize investing in free childcare instead of investing in massive police, prosecution, and criminal court budgets. We know that the Mayor attempted - and thankfully failed - to raid the library budget for this funding a few years ago, nonsensically pitting education against public libraries. We do not disagree with what Erase the Board and others have raised.

In the meantime, we plan to support this imperfect solution so that some families can benefit.

(1st flier reads, 'What (clock image) Is It Ya'll??, (a cartoon check) Time!!!, Vote *YES for early childhood education programs in New Orleans)

(2nd flier with cartoon eyes that stares at the words 'Agenda For Children', images of money, and a cartoon of 2 stick figure students set against large pencils. The text reads, '*An Informed Yes Means We Keep An Eye On Things', )

We are united in the belief that a direct investment in the people of New Orleans and the institutions that support our success requires a concentrated economic divestment from policing and carceral institutions. We do not want to see any more victims of violence - interpersonal or systemic - and, therefore, we urge our elected officials to fund the people.

(A teal flyer that reads the last sentence of the above statement)

We believe that people who have all their needs met do not generally commit violent acts. We also understand that the criminal legal system does not truly hold people accountable; it only punishes, harms, and leaves our communities further impoverished and destabilized. We must address the root causes of our community’s problem – the inequity produced as a result of an infrastructure that lacks the necessary support for families and youth. Funding the people means providing affordable, barrier-free housing, food, recreation healthcare, and comprehensive mental health support; funding New Orleans cultural bearers; and creating accessible quality education and equitable living-wage jobs.

We have tried these approaches already. The City of New Orleans and State of Louisiana, has prioritized policing and jailing its residents for decades. If these approaches worked, we would be one of the safest places in the world. We need transformative change.

'Fund the People is a collaborative of New Orleans-based organizers, lawyers, dreamers, artists, and community members.' We continue to be saddened by the current increase of violent crime our city is facing. We are deeply pained by our people who have been victimized by violence, neglect, trauma, and fear, while living under defunded social supports and educational systems that are both inadequate and inequitable. While we continue to hear the cries for carceral punishment, we know that this system is harmful and does not address violence or crime at its root.
