Sante Total Sante Total, which means “Total Health” in Haitian Kreyol, aims to provide sustainable healthcare to rural communities in the Central Plateau region of Haiti.

We believe you can only improve health through eradicating the disease of poverty. The Sante Total approach considers the entire person- physical health, well-being, education, and employment, to be essential to health and quality of life. Our History:
Gabriel Thelus is a prominent community leader who was born and raised in Jacsonville (formerly Matabonite) in the northeast region of the Central Plateau in Haiti. The son of a poor Haitian farmer, Thelus attended Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., through the efforts of Brother Cosmas Rubencamp, an Xaverian brother, David Goy and St. Mary’s Church in Blacksburg. He received an associate’s degree in agronomy in 1994. Following graduation, he returned to Haiti to fulfill his father’s dream of improving the living conditions of the people in his home village. Under the leadership and hard work of Thelus and local Haitians, they completed building the first chapel; St. Rose de Lima Catholic Grade School; a bridge; and a mission house. A medical clinic is now in the construction phases. In 2007, Alison Smith, an undergraduate at Virginia Tech, visited Jacsonville on a student volunteer trip led by Brother Cosmas and met Thelus. Impressed by the good work he was accomplishing in his village, despite poverty and lack of essential health care, Smith thought of ways to provide support to the people. After graduating from Virginia Tech the same year, Smith enrolled in the MD/PhD program at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, La. In March 2009, she organized a medical relief team with physicians, residents and medical students. These efforts grew, and now volunteers provide quarterly visits to Jacsonville with donated medical supplies and treat patients in a temporary health clinic. Following the destruction and devastation in Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, the need for healthcare for the people of Jacsonville and surrounding communities became more imminent with concerns of cholera and the spread of disease. During this time, the need for permanent healthcare for the community became abundantly apparent and led to the founding of Sante Total, which means “Total Health” in Haitian Kreyol. Sante Total, a charitable healthcare organization comprised of Tulane medical students and physicians, collaborates with local leadership including Thelus to administer healthcare and support to people in local communities located in the Central Plateau. In 25 trips, they have treated 10,000 patients. Yet, our mission in Haiti is not to just provide care for those who do not have access to it, but to create a sustainable solution in which communities are able to provide this care to their citizens. Thus, focus has now turned to establishing a medical facility to be run by Haitian medical professionals. Ultimately, the clinic will employ a Haitian doctor and nurses, and provide training to young people in the community to pursue careers in healthcare.

At Sante Total, we envision a future where all people have access to high quality health care and have their basic needs met.

Thank you for your support on Giving Tuesday this year! Together, we are making this vision a reality. Thanks to you, we have raised over $4000 to continue our work with the Jacsonville community.

A portion of our donations this year were given in memory of Linda Goy, a staunch supporter of Sante Total, from her sons James, Karl, Eric, John, and Greg. Linda Goy was instrumental in helping Gaby found the St. Rose school and has been a supporter of the school and Jacsonville for many years. She will be missed.

Together, we are making headway every day to ensure the future of global health is bright. Thank you!

Mesi Anpil (thank you so much), for your generous donations of time, energy, and money, and your willingness to help! If you didn't get a chance to support us this Giving Tuesday and would like to, please visit https://santetotal.org/

Why? Because Haiti is still the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the recent political turmoil has caused suffering in Jacsonville. Our friends are struggling with cholera, inflation, gang violence, and gas, food and medication shortages. We rely on your support to keep supporting our neighbors in Haiti and hope you think of us this holiday season.

Please lend us your support TODAY this Giving Tuesday! We have accomplished so much this year with your support, including:

-Educational Support: We have invested over $18,000 dollars in scholarships for students who will help us staff the permanent clinic including: one medical, one nursing, one pharmacy and one administrative student. Pictured here is Ben Ben speaking as the valedictorian at his pharmacy school graduation.

-Cholera prevention: The team visited 295 households, the school and churches in Jacsonville providing health education on modes of transmission, signs and symptoms and preventive measures. They reached 1327 people, distributed 16 hand washing stations as well as soap and clorox to all the households and discussed water sanitation.

-Medical care: We provided medical advice for the community through Telemedicine consults. We provided over $2000 to help patients pay for their surgery, hospitalizations and medications.

-Permanent Medical Clinic: The permanent clinic is basically done thanks to the Rotary Club of Ellicott City! The furnishings are almost done and we have purchased a microscope, centrifuge and other essential equipment. The future Doctor has almost finished his training and the nurse has completed her training and has started working at the school and at the clinic doing blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. We plan to hire a local physician to set up periodic clinics until the clinic is fully staffed.

-School Lunch Program: We expanded the school lunch program and are providing daily lunches to all of the pupils and teachers of St. Rose of Lima School. When schools close due to political reasons, Gaby sends the food home monthly to help support the families. This is sadly often the only food the kids receive during the day.

-CHEAHP (Center for the Handicapped and Aged of Pignon): We supported weekly meetings, monthly meals and a Holiday party for the center.

Gaby sends his greeting to all, saying “Hi guys. I was lost in this crazy world. Haiti is a headache continuously. Consider what the riots did, the actions of the gangsters, Lord have mercy! It is harder to administrate the activities in the community. Anyway, we still have hope, another tomorrow is possible. Thank you for the support Sante Total is giving for the community. It is a bright spot during a very difficult time.”
Please lend us your support this giving Tuesday, November 28th! Together, we can make a difference! Visit https://santetotal.org/ to give.

Giving Tuesday is here! Your donations have supported some amazing accomplishments in the past year, and will continue to sustain our programs and projects moving forward. Here are some of our wins in 2022:

- COVID and Cholera prevention: We supported ongoing COVID and cholera prevention, including demonstrating how to construct hand-washing stations and educating families on the importance of wearing masks. We plan to educate each household individually again this year now that cholera is back.

- Medical care: We provide medical advice for the community through Telemedicine consults. We also provided over $1000 to help patients pay for their surgery, hospitalizations and medications.

- School lunch program: We expanded the school lunch program and are providing daily lunches to all of the pupils and teachers of St. Rose of Lima School. When schools close due to COVID or political reasons, Gaby sends the food home monthly to help support families. This is sadly often the only food the kids receive during

- Permanent Medical Clinic: The permanent clinic is basically done thanks to the Rotary Club of Ellicott City! The fence is almost finished, and we received a $10,000 grant through the club to provide furnishings and equipment.

- Sustainable Agriculture: The fruit-bearing tree project continues to
move forward.
