Department of Film Studies at Connecticut College

Department of Film Studies at Connecticut College The ultimate integration of film theory and practice. Check out our website in link below! It is a unique and comprehensive approach to the field.

In the Connecticut College Film Department, you are asked to critically analyze the moving image in many forms, including documentary, Hollywood and national cinema, avant-garde and experimental film, and television. Production classes will give you the technical training and stylistic devices to author your own creative projects. Special opportunities:
Students often combine their interest in fil

m studies with another discipline. You can also create a self-designed major with a focus of your choosing. Recent students have framed film studies through the lenses of dance, literary adaptation, theater, social movements and politics. Some students also earn a certificate from one of the College's academic centers in areas such as arts and technology or international studies. We encourage you to study abroad for a semester or a year. Many of the most successful productions at the College have been inspired by students' experiences and observations studying in countries such as India, Spain and Costa Rica. Facilities:
Our production courses use HD video equipment. While enrolled in upper-level production courses, you have access to an array of professional cinema lights, a professional dolly with track, a 12-foot crane, Glidecams and shoulder-mount rigs, advanced audio kits and 16mm film cameras. Editing labs are accessible 24/7. We have 10 iMacs with Final Cut Pro and various audio recording/ mixing software.

"Growing up watching TV, I never had a role model that looked like me. My struggles were never portrayed. I never had a guide, never saw my compatriots. Before I even knew it, I was being told I didn’t matter, that my struggles weren’t good enough to be portrayed on screen. I was made to feel like I was less than simply because of the color of my skin, and the culture I grew up in.

URBAN(x) tries to change that.

Though the thesis film focuses on the intricacies and difficulties present with gang affiliation in a young latino’s life, this is only the first step. It’s a proof of concept for a series that will examine issues of teen pregnancy, bullying, self harm, inferiority/imposter complex, legal status, and the myth of meritocracy. My core artistic values lie with the belief that the answer to ignorance and hate is knowledge.

URBAN(x) -- Like Urbano, but different. Respectful to the depth of experiences. United by cultural commonalities, but individual in a way that must be respected. With many creed’s, religions, sexual orientations, skin tones, ethnic backgrounds, racial identifications, and more. Together, we form a community stronger than any I have ever seen. This is for mi gente. Adelante.”

-Christian Vazquez ’19 (writer/director)

Join us for the premiere of an incredibly thought provoking and powerful story, the senior honors thesis film of Christian A Vazquez. Thursday 7pm, Evans Hall, Connecticut College. RSVP below.
