With the recent warm temps and rain, ice conditions can change quickly this time of year. ⚠️❄️

Even if the pond refreezes as temperatures drop again, the ice may be weaker than it looks. Sharing this helpful reminder from the Winnisquam Watershed Network about staying safe on late-season ice. When in doubt, don’t go out.

With the extreme temperature and weather fluctuation this time of year comes an increase in icy roads and conditions. Often prompting us to feel the need to use more salt. When the ice and snow melt, the salt we use on walkways, driveways, and roads can make its way into the pond, where it builds up over time and affects water quality.

You can make a big difference with a few simple steps:
✅ Shovel first to reduce how much salt you need
✅ Use just one cup for a 20-foot driveway
✅ Sweep up leftovers after storms
✅ Store salt away from drainage areas
✅ Talk to your plow contractor about salt-saving practices

Every grain counts for Messer Pond! 💧💙

🌿 2026 Volunteer Opportunities 🌿

There’s always something happening around the Messer Pond watershed, and it truly takes many hands to keep it thriving. Whether you have an hour, a season, or a specific skill to share, MPPA volunteer opportunities offer simple, meaningful ways to support the pond, meet neighbors, and be part of the community. Every contribution counts, and there’s a place for everyone.

Here are just a few ways to get involved this year:
• Land Invasives Program – Lead
• Stormwater Asset (culverts, etc.) Inspectors
• Events Committee Members
• Aquatic Plant Growth Photographers
• Newsletter and Social Media Content Creators and Editors
• W**d Watchers
• Lake Hosts

We may also be able to accommodate student community service hours and unpaid summer internships, depending on the requirements.

If you’re interested in volunteering or would like to learn more about any of these opportunities, please reach out to us at [email protected].

Let’s keep Messer Pond healthy and resilient, together. 💧

Collaboration across our watershed matters. 💧

Earlier this month, the Lake Sunapee Protective Association hosted a special regional meeting on salt management planning and reducing chloride pollution in our lakes and ponds. We were glad to have MPPA represented as part of the conversation and to continue learning alongside our neighboring lake associations.

Road salt impacts don’t stop at town lines, and neither should our solutions.

A little winter time humor to take your mind off the cold! 😄

No “Drama Pond” here!

Just folks looking out for each other, keeping their lines and gear checked, speeds reasonable, and winter fun safe for all. ❄️

Thank you, friends and neighbors, for making Messer Pond drama-free. 👏

As you go out and enjoy this beautiful winter weather, please make ice safety a top priority! Even though ice-in has been declared on Lake Sunapee, please use extra caution if you go out on the lake. The thickness of ice as it forms and its reaction to the weather will vary greatly from spot to spot, so you cannot check the thickness in one place and assume it's that thick everywhere. Please be as safe as possible while recreating on our area waterbodies.
