John Gorka Returns to Friday Night Folk, May 15, 7:30pm!

Friday Night Folk will conclude its 2025/2026 season with fan-favorite John Gorka. Gorka notes, “Life is not fair and love is not enough, but it is the only thing worth pursuing.” His songs, rich with depth, beauty and emotion, have gained international attention. Rolling Stone describes him as “the preeminent male singer songwriter of the new folk movement,” while the Boston Globe called out his “sophisticated intelligence and provocative originality.”
While studying Philosophy and History in the 1970s, Gorka met folk troubadours Stan Rogers, Eric Andersen, Tom Paxton and Claudia Schmidt. He was captivated. As his soulful baritone and compelling songwriting began turning heads, people who had inspired him--Suzanne Vega, Bill Morrissey, Nanci Griffith, Christine Lavin, Shawn Colvin--became his peers.
A score of artists have recorded and performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell. Gorka has performed with Eliza Gilkyson, Lucy Kaplansky, Antje Duvekot, and Christine Lavin, whom you may remember from the Friday Night Folk stage.

The Kennedys Return to Friday Night Folk on SATURDAY, April 11

In more than two decades together, the New York duo The Kennedys has covered a broad musical landscape, surveying acoustic songwriting, organic rock, and a Byrds-inspired jangle that drew the attention of Roger McGuinn, Steve Earle, and most notably Nanci Griffith.

Pete and Maura Kennedy, both East Coast natives, met in Austin, Texas, joined forces with Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra for a couple of years, and set out on a road that has led them all over the US and the UK. Broad roots and the fulfillment of a personal American dream come together in dozens of songs. Buddy Holly style roots, the tuneful cadences of the Everly Brothers, and the ringing 12-string jangle of the early Byrds intersperse with darker moments that recall British folk rock a la Fairport Convention. Along the way, they hosted a nationwide radio program, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music, and have been core artists on folk radio.

The Kennedys live-streamed a weekly concert during the pandemic, performing over a thousand songs. That vast overview laid the foundation for a new collection of original, socially-conscious songs, which appear on their album Headwinds.

Maura: During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording, America changed in massive ways, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. […] Our love of the great things about this country, things that are under threat, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home" to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.

Joe Crookston Comes to Friday Night Folk, New London, CT, March 13

Joe Crookston is a force of nature on stage. Pure magic. His rhythm is infectious. He’s funny as hell one moment and transcendent the next. From touring with Gordon Lightfoot, headlining major US festivals, receiving “Album of the Year,” and releasing NINE BECOMES ONE, to being named Folk Alliance International Artist-in-Residence, Joe is on fire. He’s played with Suzanne Vega, Dar Williams, David Francey, John McCutcheon, John Gorka, and Judy Collins. Two of his songs, Blue Tattoo and Brooklyn in July, have been made into feature films on Vimeo.

He awakens the cynics. He’s in his power as he communes with his audience.

Geoff Kaufman returns to Friday Night Folk on January 9, 2026
- songs for the young, the old, the concerned

Songs of the sea, the earth, the heart and spirit: All of these are in Geoff Kaufman’s ditty bag. Ballads, work songs, and songs of love; poignant songs of people engaged in life’s struggles, humorous glimpses of human foibles, and insights into history. In 1978, Geoff joined Pete Seeger and the Sloop Singers and sang with them for ten years supporting the work of Clearwater to clean up the Hudson River.

Since retiring from Mystic Seaport in 2019 after 35 years of singing and coordinating the Chantey Program and directing the Sea Music Festival, Geoff has pursued a somewhat less frantic schedule of concerts, programs, and annual musical trips. His most recent album is On a Day Like Today, released in 2024.

Geoff has built a repertoire of environmental and civil rights songs which he shares with young people, old people, people concerned with social justice. He often performs at Unitarian Universalist churches, for and with people championing care of the earth and its varied people. Come join him at All Souls UU!
